When Apple introduced iOS 8 in early June, one of the first changes we saw was the change from Yahoo to The Weather Channel as the source for supplying weather information in the Weather application. While recent reports suggest that Yahoo was trying to integrate more services into iOS, including establishing itself as the default search engine, little by little more details are emerging as to why Yahoo is no longer the official provider of the Weather app data.
The publication Re-Code reports that former Yahoo board member and current CEO of The Weather Channel, David Kenny, has been who has made this change possible:
The situation Yahoo is in, outside of iOS 8, is due to an agreement designed by former Yahoo board member and current CEO of The Weather Channel David Kenny, who made shrewd efforts to replace Yahoo's service with his own, which he has been developing since taking over as CEO at The Weather Channel.
Keep in mind that Yahoo has always obtained weather data from The Weather Channel. What we don't know is whether Apple had plans to pull Yahoo as a provider and go straight to the source before David Kenny started developing the new and improved weather service.
To convince Apple to make the switch and cut with Yahoo, The Weather Channel had to add much more information than the current offer is providing Yahoo on the weather app in iOS 7.
A Yahoo executive stated that Yahoo had been living without offering improvements, not worrying about the service he was offering and he only cared about the service he offered when it was too late.
