Pebble: the competition they want to be for the Apple Watch and never will be

Kickstarter goal reached in four minutes. Four million dollars raised in less than three hours. More than twelve million at the time of writing this article. The results achieved by the campaign that Pebble started just a week ago speak for themselves. A low-performance smartwatch that is being a success. Pebble Time.

After a dreamy week, the company that seven days ago presented us with the renewal of its acclaimed watch has taken advantage of the global showcase that is the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to present a new member of its family of smartwatches: the Pebble Time Steel.

Perhaps the image at the top of this article is just a coincidence. Perhaps the Pebble people have not looked at the Apple Watch at all when making their new watch. Perhaps the choice of colors is pure chance. Perhaps it is the product of chance that it shows up less than a week before the Apple event. Perhaps, and only perhaps, the last intention of the Californians would be to do something similar to the smartwatch of the apple company. Or maybe not.

The smartwatch market is going to give a lot to talk about this year, and not only because of the Apple Watch, but also because of the fierce competition that there will be in this field. Smart watches are undoubtedly the product of 2015, and that all companies know. These days, the main companies on the technological scene are striving to make a watch model with the characteristics, design and performance expected from the big brands. However, and returning to the subject at hand, I think that calling the rivalry between the Apple Watch and the Pebble Time Steel "fierce" is, to say the least, degrading.

apple-watch

The difference is brutal. Sections that in other devices are not as disparate as the design, specifications and functionality, become an abyss when we talk about these two watches. And make no mistake, it is not about defending a specific brand against another: it is plain and simple reality. Apple's smartwatch beats Pebble in practically everything, especially in the three aspects mentioned above. But this does not mean anything. The Pebble is far from being a bad watch, why else would it be so successful? Not at the device level premium that we are used to seeing from other companies, that is true, but does that mean that it is bad? Not at all, it just has a different approach. Or so I thought.

The objective of Pebble, as I understand it, is to bring smartwatches closer to the consumer in a different way than what the rest offers us and, above all, more economically. Its specifications have never intended to make it a device premium, far from it, and that is something that has undoubtedly played in its favor. Imagine how surprised I was to see a Pebble Time Steel next to an Apple Watch and, what is worse, with an appreciable similarity.

The presentation of the Time Steel has made me rethink what is the real approach that the company wants to give to this watch. I mean, is it focused on just being a fancy version of the base model? Or do you really want to give the feeling of being before a model worthy of comparison with the Apple Watch? The feeling that they have transmitted to me today is to be coming down to the level of those manufacturers of Asian origin who, lacking in imagination, seek "inspiration" in the work of others to show the public a mirage of something that is not what it appears.

Maybe they really mean that. Perhaps they want to establish themselves as an "affordable" option for higher-end products. Although it is also possible that this may be nothing more than unfounded impressions and the similarities are entirely the result of chance.

Or maybe not.

I can partially agree with this entry.

I have had an original Pebble for two years, and I couldn't be happier with it.

I wanted it to receive notifications (emails, whatsapps, etc.), and it complies perfectly
    .
The biggest difference that can be seen with respect to other smartwatches is, apart from the battery life (5 days in my case) and the screen (yes, black and white, it is not valid to see dwarf photos), is that the screen it is always on. No touching a button to find out what time it is. And in broad daylight it reads perfectly.

Of course, its construction quality is commensurate with the price. But it is not like those Chinese products, since the firmware is constantly evolving (via OTA), and the huge community of developers have made the poor man's smartwatch an option, especially for that niche of users who are looking for nothing more than support in your daily communication.

Now it comes with a color screen (quite limited, it seems), but with the same characteristics that have differentiated it from any other: waterproof (I swim with it), always-on screen and long-lasting battery.

It is clear that Pebble have things that make it different from another manufacturer. The comparison with Asian products was only focused on design, not functionalities or development.

Thank you for sharing your opinion 🙂

To say that the Apple Watch beats the Pebble in everything ... the battery of the first one will not reach 1 day, while that of the Pebble Time Steel reaches 10 days. Frankly, I don't understand that blindness from the whole apple thing.

I am the first to believe that the Pebble is not a bad watch, even if I had to buy one now I would value it above the Apple Watch, which you would undoubtedly know if you listened to our podcast. It is not a criticism of the Pebble as such, but of the image they have given the Time Steel and its outward appearance.

I mean, I'm going to copy you because you're a little guy and nobody cares that I big man (Apple) copy you. Copying is copying, whether it be to a small or large company.

Be objective or dedicate yourself to something else!

As Jack the Ripper said, let's go by parts:

You have some of your data wrong -> "Kickstarter goal reached in four minutes." Incorrect. (32 minutes since kickstarter was active, 17 since Pebble announced the new campaign and people went in droves)

"It is not at the level of the premium devices that we are used to seeing from other companies."
better battery, (7 (10 in the case of time steel) vs 1, and this 7 to 1 is the one that matters)
    screen on permanently.
receives notifications, and in some cases it is capable of giving predefined responses (for now, everything will work)
    waterproof.
It allows you to control the music of the mobile, and well, a thousand more things with the app of the
Fantastic and very healthy developer community.
software updates with new features every few months (not every year, or never like others)
Accelerometer that is not only good for tracking daytime physical activity, but also nighttime with sleep control app, smart alarms to wake up at the optimal time from sleep, etc. Which you can not do with any other. BECAUSE IT WILL BE CARRYING ON THE TABLE AND NOT ON YOUR WRIST.
color screen (64 colors, yes. but putting a photo of the eiffel tower on a 2 cm screen is at least an unnecessary drain on battery.)
A new operating system concept, based on a timeline. very useful in many cases.

and you say that it is worse than the others? ("But it's not bad", how nice of you). Well, tell me in what, male.
that he copies to apple? mmm yaaa. They have only been the first to be successful, overtaking apple for two years in which apple has not had in the market, and android watches crashed one after the other in separate sales failures.

But as he took out a golden watch similar to the apple one, he already marks them as mean.
by the way, take a look at this (https://www.google.es/search?q=golden+watch+red+strap&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=2B72VPi_GMLrUqCEgpAI&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1280&bih=818)
Let's see if Apple is the first to use gold and red on a watch now.

your last two paragraphs are regrettable, for everything mentioned above.

The Pebble Time does not seem to me to be similar to the Apple Watch. The only thing they have in common in terms of their design is the shape of the screen. I also don't think the Pebble is looking to compete with the Apple Watch, they have totally different approaches.
In addition, even without knowing the exact price of the Apple Watch, it is speculated that it will be almost double that of the Pebble Time.
I'm a blog reader, but in some cases (like this one) you say things that aren't (or maybe I'm the one who doesn't agree). Time will tell. Greetings.

Of course we despise copycats without shame, copying at such levels as pebble and recently samsung is getting too low, it sucks you.

I never usually comment but after reading this article I have not been able to avoid it.
Luis, do you really believe everything you've written? The Apple Watch has not even been made official and you are already saying that the Pebble Time Steel intends to copy its design? The first generation Pebble has already appeared in two versions as well: the normal (cheaper) and the Steel (somewhat more expensive but with higher quality materials). It is normal for the new Pebble Time Steel to follow the same script. And a copy is not made in two days, the Pebble Time has been behind many months of work and I assure you that they do not intend to copy the Apple watch.

What beats him in everything? Bullshit. The battery alone is worth buying the Pebble first. We are forgetting that it is first and foremost a watch, and his thing is not having to charge it every night (or even twice a day). The watch only has to have certain non-complex functions, and for me the Pebble fully fulfills them. Or properties as simple as being submersible should be essential. The user does not need to wear a mini-iPhone on the wrist, just a simple watch that makes certain tasks easier.

As for the article, I think you do look down on it. If it was not your intention, check your way of writing (constructive criticism). Because in short the article has sounded like "Apple Watch will be the best and Pebble Time a cheap cheap copy", too fanboy ... and I say that I have an iPhone 5, an iPod Shuffle, a Macbook Pro and a Pebble Steel with which I am charmed.

Don't take it the wrong way, Luis, but I really think you should think carefully about what you write before publishing it.

Pebble has understood what the others do not: that the user already has a screen of 5 inches or more in a pocket, and that he uses it. Smartwatches are not miniature phones. They should be tools that complement the phone and improve the entire user experience, and not a separate gadget. Functionality above all. This is why Pebble is still the best.

  11.   Juaco said

Speaking of Apple fan. I have an iMac, a Macbook Air, a second generation iPad mini, an iPad 3, an iPhone 5, an iPhone 6, and a wonderful original PEBBLE. Battery life is a deciding factor. Being able to see the screen at all times is another deciding factor. That the screen, when viewed, is more "beautiful" does not give it any extra functionality, it is simply more "beautiful". The day the duration and visibility are resolved, the landscape will change. Nowadays, if what you want for functionality, there is no other option than the Pebble.

I felt great contempt for a product that has done it in an enviable way. It is unfortunate. We should admire them just for trying to fight in a market as intimidating as it is today. Even more so with his success.
