Pegatron starts using robots in its facilities

Pegatron

Apple's second largest maker, Pegatron, is following in the footsteps of its Foxconn counterpart and has started to automate its factories through the use of robots, thus reducing the number of hires, as reported by the head of the company. At the moment, the first factory to adopt the automation of its facilities is the one located in Shanghai, so it will considerably reduce the number of employees, using 20 workers for the same tasks instead of 100.

At the moment we do not know how many factories and production lines have been automated, but this fact will solve two problems for the company. The first problem is finding enough qualified labor to be able to assemble the different devices. Secondly, it will save the cost of hiring and salaries, salaries that have been increased in recent times due to pressure from workers. This change indirectly benefits the Cupertino-based company, as by reducing labor costs, Pegatron can lower its production costs, resulting in higher profits for Apple.

Foxconn is already making great strides in automation, reducing the workforce at its Kunshan factory from 110.000 to just over 50.000. In addition, the authorities where these facilities are located have helped Foxconn economically despite the socio-economic consequences arising from the change in the type of workforce, since thousands of people will have to leave Kunshan to look for work elsewhere.

Kunshan has a large population of migrant workers, who will be forced to move to other towns or their places of origin, seriously affecting the local economy. According to the latest rumors Pegatron is taking over production of the 7-inch iPhone 6 or iPhone 4,7SE, while the 5,5-inch model has ended up again in the hands of Foxconn.
