Wi-Fi support. What is it and how it works

The arrival of iOS 9, like any great launch, brought many new features to our iPhone, iPod and iPad. One of these novelties is the Wi-Fi support, which will allow our device to connect to the mobile data network automatically when it detects that the wireless signal is weak. But is it worth having it activated? Many users assure that the data contracted with their operator has been consumed more quickly since the launch of iOS 9, something that, as in everything, can sometimes have to do with this new function and there will be cases in which it is pure coincidence.

Where is Wi-Fi Support

Lets start by the beginning. Although the option includes the word "Wi-Fi", we can activate or deactivate the function from Settings / Mobile data. If, as is my case, you have an iPhone that you use for support or for testing without a SIM card, you will not be able to access Mobile Data, so you will not be able to see this option.

It is important to mention that Wi-Fi Support is enabled by default, something that many users, including myself, believe to be a mistake. While it is true that it helps in most cases, it is also true that it should be the user who decides whether to activate it or not.

Compatible devices

  • iPhone 5 or higher.
  • Cellular versions from the 4th generation iPad or higher.
  • Cellular versions of iPad mini from the 2nd generation or higher.

How do we know it is working

When we connect to some Bluetooth devices, we see that the status bar (where the time, the mobile signal and the battery icon are) turns blue. When we use an audio program, the bar turns red. In the case of Wi-Fi Support, we will see that the bar turns gray before one of the balls that indicate the quality of telephone coverage appears.

Which apps use Wi-Fi Assist

Many, both from Apple and third parties. In the case of applications that come by default, it will only connect if the network is very slow or cannot connect. For example, if we are using Safari and the page does not load, the iPhone will understand that we are the ones who want to consult a website and we cannot, so Wi-Fi assistance will be activated so that we can visit it. Third-party applications do not respect our data plan as much, so it is worth making sure that some applications only download content, such as video or photos, if we are connected to a Wi-Fi network.

The applications of content streamingLike Spotify, they won't cause Wi-Fi Assist to turn on. Large attachments will also not be downloaded in mail applications, for example. It also won't work for processes that are running in the background.

What if I am abroad?

No problem. Wi-Fi support will not connect to our data plan if we are out of the territory where our rate is in force.
