Last September, Twitter began testing a new character limit for tweets in a closed group of users, going from 140 to 280. The extension of the character limit means having more space to express our ideas without having to abbreviate to maximum when publishing a tweet, but the essence that characterized the bird's social network since its launch is lost, since that is what the social network Facebook is for. After a couple of months of testing, Twitter has officially announced the extension of the limit for all users, so that from now on we will have at our disposal up to 280 characters to say what we want.
The main reason for Twitter to extend this limit is because in some languages, such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean, the number of characters to express say the same it is practically half that in English, Spanish, French or Portuguese. After these two months of testing, the company claims that tweets with a higher number of characters have received a greater number of likes, retweets and mentions in addition to having achieved much more followers in the same period of time and having invested more time making use of the social network.
According to the Twitter spokeswoman
In September, we launched a test that expanded the 140 character limit so that everyone around the world could more easily express themselves in a tweet. Our goal was to make this possible while making sure to maintain the speed and brevity that Twitter does, Twitter does.
Users who have been part of this experiment say that a higher character limit made them feel more satisfied when it comes to expressing themselves on Twitter, in addition to improving their ability to find good content and Twitter in general.
