iCloud Private Relay will not see the light in Russia

iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 bring with them one of Apple's most ambitious features: iCloud Private Relay or iCloud Private Relay. It is a tool that allows the user to hide their IP at all times preventing services from getting a location profile. Apple announced in beta 7 of iOS and iPadOS 15 that it would leave the function in the form of a public beta and it would be released officially but disabled by default. A few months ago Apple announced some countries that they would not see this function due to problems with their legislation. Today we know that Russia-wide access to the feature has been blocked and will likely be added to the list of countries where the feature will not be available.

iCloud Private Relay is a service that allows you to connect to practically any network and browse the internet with Safari in an even more secure and private way. It ensures that the traffic coming out of your device is encrypted and uses two independent internet relays so that no one can use your IP address, your location and your browsing activity to create a detailed profile about you.

In June, Tim Cook assured that the iCloud Private Relay it would not reach Belarus, Colombia, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkmenistan, Uganda and the Philippines. In the interview, he assured that there was no impediment other than regulatory reasons in each country. Therefore, the final versions of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 would not introduce this function and in case of accessing the country it would not be available for use.

A few hours ago tweets began to appear and news users with iOS and iPadOS 15 betas they couldn't browse with iCloud Private Relay in Russia. In fact, they got a message that said: 'iCloud Private Relay is not available in this region'. Therefore, Apple may have blocked the feature in Russia. Therefore, it would be added to the countries in which the tool will not be available from the official launch of the operating systems. Also extendable to macOS Monterey, possibly.

ICloud Private Relay uses two different servers to hide the user's IP and location. In the first server the original IP is eliminated and in the second the signal is bounced to the destination server. The IP that is sent is a false address that geo-locates the original IP to be able to receive personalized content. Although the user's IP address is hidden and prevents the servers from creating browsing profiles.
