Apple Joins the New Transportation Committee of the US Department of Automation

Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives, is listed as one of 25 members who joined the new US Department of Transportation (DOT) Automation Committee. This means that the iPhone maker will play an active role in monitoring self-driving vehicles and help shape the future of transportation.

Before joining Apple in 2013 to lead environmental initiatives, Lisa Jackson worked as Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

According to DOT press release, The new advisory committee is scheduled to hold its first meeting on January 16 to immediately begin work on "some of the most pressing and relevant issues facing transportation today," including the development and deployment of automated vehicles.

"During my time at the Department, we have fostered some of the most important technology changes related to transportation while maintaining our focus on the safety of the American people," said US Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx.

"This new automation committee will work to advance salvage innovations to boost our economy and make our transportation network fairer, more reliable and more efficient."

The committee has executive members from companies such as Amazon, FedEx, Zipcar, Hyperloop Uno, Uber, the National Safety Council, and Lyft, as well as General Motors President and CEO Maria Barra, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garrett and University of California Engineering Professor Stanford, Dr. J. Chris Gerdes.

In November, Apple wrote a letter to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), regarding autonomous vehicle policies, in an effort to help define industry best practices.

"We have provided feedback to NHTSA as Apple is investing heavily in machine learning and autonomous systems," a company spokesperson said at the time.

Today's development is especially interesting in light of Apple's secret, Project Titan, which has recently gone from building an electric vehicle to development of autonomous driving software.
