Apple hires another Google AI engineer

Ian Goodfellow

Apple signed last month to one of Google's best artificial intelligence engineers, to incorporate it into your machine learning team, where we can also find another former Google employee John Giannandrea, who is currently reporting directly to Tim Cook after his promotion.

Ian Goodfellow, has been working since last month in Apple's special projects group, as director of machine learning, as we can read on Goodfellow's LinkedIn profile. Goodfellow is considered the father of antagonistic generative networks (better known as GAN for its acronym in English).

Generative networks antagonistic to a class of artificial intelligence algorithms used in unsupervised machine learning. They are implemented by a system of two neural networks that compete in a kind of zero-sum game. This technique can generate photos that look authentic and they are capable of fooling AI algorithms.

This technology has been used in recent years to generate a lot of fake content, either in audio, video and text format. Goodfellow, worked at OpenAI before ending up at Google until last month.

Goodfellow's hiring comes a year after the signing of John Giannandrea, who until then was Google's head of search and artificial intelligence. Giannandrea since last July, was promoted to Apple's head of machine learning reporting directly to Tim Cook.

Many are the movements that Apple is making in recent months in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence, so it is likely that sooner or later we will see those efforts reflected in some new iOS function, in addition to improve the entire process that is carried out within our iPhone.
