Apple Intelligence is without a doubt the most important feature of Apple's updates for after summer, but it will not be available in Europe, or at least that's what we knew until now, because Now there are clues that would indicate that it will be available, although only on macOS.
Apple's Artificial Intelligence was the main protagonist of the presentation of iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 at the last WWDC 2024 in June. But shortly after learning about it, we were shocked to learn that due to European regulations, Apple had decided to exclude this functionality in the old continent until it was clarified how it should be implemented to comply with our legislation. However, recent findings that have been found in the release notes of the first Betas of the new operating systems could suggest that this limitation could only apply to iOS and iPadOS, the iPhone and iPad operating systems, and that we could enjoy the new features in macOS 15 Sequoia.
With the recent launch of iOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1, the first versions that will bring Apple Intelligence for Apple devices, their release notes have been known, and in them there is a difference that gives us Europeans hope. We refer to the section of these notes in which reference is made to its availability:
- iOS 18.1: Apple Intelligence is available on iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Apple Intelligence It is not currently available in Europe and China.
- macOS 15.1: Apple Intelligence is available on Macs with M1 processors and later. Apple Intelligence It is not currently available in China.
As you can see, while in the iOS version China and Europe are mentioned as exclusion zones, in macOS 15.1 only China is included. Why could this fact be explained? Because the European regulations on digital markets (DMA) only affect the so-called "Gatekeepers", and in In that section, the European Union has included the iPhone and the iPad, but not the Macs. To be considered a Gatekeeper you must have such a presence in the market that you can be considered "dominant" and therefore more demanding regulations apply to you. So it may be that while Apple and Europe are looking for a solution applicable to iPhones and iPads, at least Macs can make use of Artificial Intelligence. Whoever does not console himself is because he does not want to.
