The Apple Podcasts app on the Watch is wrongly increasing listeners

The discovery was put on the table by the technological laboratory of Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) which explains that an error in the download calculations from the Apple Watch podcasts application causes the numbers of listeners to increase erroneously.

The account of listeners is important to know the audiences of one or other programs and above all to know the progress of the statistics of users who listen to podcasts on their devices. From IAB Tech Las they explain that From next October 1, the user traffic detected by the Apple Watch in its podcast application will no longer be valid for its audience statistics of this content.

The problem lies in the download from the Apple Watch App

And it seems that all the downloads of the podcasts that are made automatically on the Apple smart watch are counted as if they were two listeners, one for the watch and one for the iPhone to which the Apple Watch is paired. This problem causes the audience traffic to multiply by two and therefore increases the number of downloads in the wrong way.

As we read in MacRumors It seems that the Technology Laboratory of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) will stop counting this data and possibly this will condition the audience statistics of some podcasters, but logically it will be real data and in the end that is the most important thing. From the IAB they argue everything that happened and explain that they even contacted Apple to solve this problem in the official watch application, so in case Apple solves the failure they will review their protocol again and they will include all the data from the Apple Watch in their statistics again.
