Apple publishes information about iOS 9.3 Apple Music API

Apple Music Privacy

When the betas of iOS 9.3 were being tested, there was a novelty that left us baffled. In the privacy settings "Media Library" appeared with the Music application icon, so we all thought it was the iCloud library which, as you all know, is the library of Apple Music. Until now that option had been almost stopped, but Apple has already begun to promote its API for developers to make use of.

In the initial confusion, what some media and myself thought was that third-party applications would have access to the iCloud library to add music from these applications, but it was not something likely considering what Apple is like and the control it likes to have over everything it creates. What the developers can do is detailed below.

Developers will have access to the Apple Music library

  • Developers can see if a user is currently a member.
  • Developers can see where the users account is from.
  • Developers can queue the next song or songs based on a song identifier.
  • Developers can inspect lists already available in My Music or create new lists with a title and description.

On the other hand, Apple has also launched the page Apple Music Best Practices and expanded App Store Review Guidelines for Apple Music. According to Apple guidelines, applications using this API are subject to the following restrictions:

  • Apps using the Apple Music API that trigger no action playback by explicit user action will be rejected.
  • Applications with the Apple Music API must expose and respect standard multimedia controls such as Play, Pause, and Skip.
  • Applications using the Apple Music API should not request payment or other monetary access to play the Apple Music service, such as in-app purchases or advertising.

In this way, it seems that the doubts have already been dispelled. In fact, there are already applications that request access to this API, such as Shazam, and we will surely see many more soon.
