Apple cuts Apple News publishers' commission to 15%

Apple News +

Who does not cry, does not breastfeed, as the saying goes. Apple has responded to complaints from publishers offering their content through Apple News, requesting that the Cupertino-based company reduce your commission of 30% of each subscription. On this occasion, Apple has not turned a deaf ear (as it usually does in these cases) and has lowered its commission to 15%.

Until now, publishers were getting 70% of user subscriptions during the first year, a percentage that increased to 85% when the user had completed one year on the platform. From now on, Apple will keep from the first month of subscription with 15%, which will allow publishers to earn more money through this platform.

According to Apple in the announcement of this new program:

The News Partner Program aims to ensure that Apple News customers maintain access to trusted news and information from many of the world's leading publishers, while supporting publishers' financial stability.

The only thing Apple asks in return is maintain a strong presence in Apple News. All those publishers who want to enter this program, must offer an Apple News channel and publish content in Apple News format, that is to say, in multimedia format that facilitates the reading of the articles on the iPhone, iPad and Mac through the Apple News application.

Publishers must offer an app on the App Store in which users can purchase auto-renewing subscriptions through Apple's in-app purchasing system. Throughout 2020, media such as New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, among others, send you a joint letter to Tim Cook requesting that economic conditions be improved.
