Apple plans to invest again in Denmark to build a new data center in the country, a data center that will be powered solely by renewable energy. This information has been announced by the environment minister and has subsequently been confirmed to Reuters with the head of Apple in the country, Erik Stannow.
This will be the second data center that Apple builds in the country. The first is located in Viborg, but it will not come into operation until the end of this year. The new data center will be built in Aabenraa, near the German border and about 200 kilometers south of Viborg.
The expected date for this new data center to come online is the second quarter of 2019, although knowing the slowness and parsimony of Apple when building anything, it is very likely that the works will not be completed until the end of 2020 or early 2021. This new data center will be responsible for managing the Apple messaging platform, Siri, Apple Maps and the App Store for all users in most of Europe.
It seems that in Denmark welcomes this type of investment that generate a large number of jobs, not only during construction but also when they are put into operation. However, in Ireland, specifically in Athenry, Apple has been since 2015 negotiating the construction of a new data center in the country, a construction that will cost Apple 900 million dollars.
This new data center is currently paralyzed by a court waiting to calculate the environmental damage that the installation of this data center can cause, a data center whose expected opening date was for the beginning of this year.
