BlindSquare is one of those applications that was born to give accessibility and make life easier for people with problems. In this case, BlindSquare is a tool designed for people who suffer from loss of vision and is also intended for daily use of blind people. BlindSquare has been the winner of the contest Open Cities App Challenge, a competition in which those apps created to improve life in the big cities of Europe stand out and which takes place within the framework of the Smart City Expo 2012.
The application makes use of the information stored on Foursquare to give audio instructions. According to the creator of BlindSquare, the Finnish Ilka Prittimaa, “the app is available in 8 languages and the users, blind people, are helping to translate it to make it available in 26 languages. It is a global project that breaks borders ”.
