Calls from one iPhone also ring on another. What's going on?

Calls from one iPhone ringing on another

There is a service offered by the operators called MultiSIM, which allows two or more telephones to use the same number. If we use a MultiSIM, when they call our number several telephones will ring, but what if we do not have it contracted and received calls appear on two iPhones? At first it shouldn't, but we can check a couple of things so that only our main phone rings every time our number is called.

If we have more than one iOS / macOS device, we will have Handoff available, a function that Apple introduced together with iOS 8 that allows us, for example, to start an activity on one device and end it on another. This is possible on devices that use the same Apple ID, so we are already giving you a clue of what may be happening if an iPhone rings when we have called another. But, sometimes, not everything is so simple, so below we will comment on everything that may be happening if you experience this problem.

Calls on two iPhones with the same Apple ID

Handoff

Initially, the system that makes an iPad, iPod Touch or Mac ring when our iPhone is called is part of Handoff. If we have a non-iPhone Apple device configured with the same Apple ID as our iPhone in its settings and Handoff activated, this device will ring at the same time as the iPhone. If we have an iPhone, an iPad and a Mac and they are all configured with the same Apple ID, we will see that, when they call us on the iPhone, the three devices will ring.

But the problem we are dealing with in this post is slightly different, since an iPhone shouldn't ring unless they called us on your SIM card number. It will sound at the same time as another iPhone if we have FaceTime configured with the same Apple ID by one of the following options:

  • In the FaceTime settings of the second iPhone we have only the same Apple ID that we use in the main iPhone configured. If this is the case, our secondary iPhone should only ring when we are called on our Apple ID and not our phone number.
  • In addition to the Apple ID, we also have the same phone number configured and selected. This is the most likely and will cause that, when we are called to the telephone number of our main telephone, the secondary one will also ring.

Solutions

We already know what are the problems that can cause calls from an iPhone to ring on another Apple phone. Now let's avoid it:

FaceTime on iPad

  • Change Apple ID in iCloud Settings. The first thing we can do is go to Settings / iCloud, disconnect our Apple ID and use any other. This usually works in most cases. If what we want is to use the same account for the App Store or other Apple content stores, we can do it with total freedom, since Handoff, FaceTime, etc., will not use the same Apple ID and will not cause the problem that we deal with in this post.
  • Change how we are contacted by FaceTime. Another thing we can do is access Settings / FaceTime and check that the phone number of the main phone is not marked on the second phone as a contact method. Here we would have to choose to be contacted by our email (which would be the Apple ID) or deactivate FaceTime and activate it using a different ID.
  • Restore secondary device. Great evils, great remedies. At least one of the two previous solutions should have solved our problem, but we can never rule out the possibility that there is a software bug that has "trapped" the function and continues to do its thing even if in theory we have disabled it. With this in mind, restoring the secondary device should fix all of our problems. And if when activating it we use a different Apple ID, we can already be 99.99% sure that it will be.

Have you experienced the problem of calls ringing on multiple iPhones? How did you solve it?

They are radical solutions ... change the Apple ID? Of course. But what IF we want to HAVE THE SAME ID on two different phones? You can: SETTINGS / PHONE / CALL ON OTHER DEVICES: NO.
