Continuity or Handoff for Macs prior to 2012

bt-40

A few days ago I published the form of activate Handoff on your iPhone, iPad and Mac, but at the same time we saw that many of us do not have the latest Mac and, therefore, we will not be able to enjoy this advantage.

After investigating there are a couple of options that can be done to qualify for this functionality without buying a new computer, which does not deserve it in 99 percent of the cases.

The origin of it being a problem is the Bluetooth, which until those manufactured in mid-2011 were made with Bluetooth 2.1 + ERD a fairly basic protocol that was put into circulation in 2007. Bypassing the version 3.0 of 2009 and 4.0 of 2010.

We assume that the requirements that were thought to be needed were marked by desktop peripherals and little else, therefore version 2.1 met the bandwidth needs that were estimated in a transfer of 3 megabit per second while all later versions are in the 24 megabit per second.

Being a radio frequency system, its type can also be measured based on the maximum power and therefore your range. They are three classes: Class 1 with a power of 100 mW and a range of 30 meters, Class 2 2.5 mW power and a range of 5 to 10 meters and the Class 3 with a power of 1 mW and only one meter of range.

The version required to use Handoff is 4.0, which includes Classic bluetooth, High speed bluetooth (WiFi-based) and the protocols of the Low consumption Bluetooth (Bluetooth Low Energy or BLE, that works with a stack and its protocol is new looking to make simple links quickly).

The problem is that this Bluetooth system in the computers of mid-2011 are built-in and they will not want to change it in any official store, however, there are two options to improve the BT and try to get the Handoff functionality:

By means of an external BT 4.0 adapter via USB.

  1. In System Preferences, you have to verify that the BT is recognized and works.
  2. Select it by default.
  3. You will also have to tell the system using the Port with the sequence «sudo nvram bluetoothHostControllerSwitchBehavior = »always»«

This system has worked on some systems and in others it has left the peripherals without connection.

Change the BT board

For the 21,5-inch iMac from mid-2011 there is a guide on iFixit de how to change the board containing the bluetooth on the other with version 4.0 of the protocol.

La guide for 27 inch version, but the iMac from mid-2010, you also have it on the same platform. (Thank you MBerries for the contribution)

Expert advice

After speaking with several Genius Apple Store they have recommended that, unless you have a high level of knowledge, do not get involved in changing the plate. Likewise, the other system can cost you 10 euros but get rid of the bug whether it would work on your iMac.

And those of us who have Macbook Pro from 2010 can't change the Bluetooth chip? Is it worth the bluetooth usb?

    1.    Carmen rodriguez said

Yes, you can also, in fact on the web there is more information about laptops than desktops… you have a guide at this link:
      http://www.faq-mac.com/tutoriales/activar-handoff-mac-pro-2010/52208

        Great information Carmen.

Be careful that the link is for MacPRO 2010 and Jose's question was for Macbook PRO 😉 In which I am also interested hehe.

        Thanks

And those of us who have iMac from 2009 is it possible to change it?

Let's see how long the loudmouths take to criticize this post ... very good contribution, Carmen, thank you.

And where can you get the BT 4.0 boards?, That is, what is the reference of the component ...

    1.    Carmen rodriguez said

The reference is in the same guide, it depends on your computer, and they can be bought in the same iFixit or take a risk with eBay.
If you are not sure, ask iFixit and they will answer you in a moment.
      regards

Check the iFixit page and I can't find where is the 4.0 board for the mid 2011 model if you can place the link it would be better

For the Mac med 2011 it is not necessary to change the board since your Bluetooth is LE and it is compatible you can see it in: about this Mac> system information> hardware> Bluetooth.
What happens is that Apple has not activated it on Macs from 2011, I don't know why but it can be activated and no chip needs to be changed.
In this tutorial they explain it to you:

Thanks !! I did not put this resource because my iMac from mid-2011 did not work and since there were no comments, I did not know if it was just me or everyone.

It is therefore said, there is a third way for Handoff, thanks for the contribution !!

(Note; I have removed one of the comments, that you had duplicated it, I hope you do not mind ...)

I tried with an iMac mid 2011 and it did not work either, now the tutorial only says that it is for macboockair and Mac mini

Hello! Keep in mind that step 12.13,14, 15, XNUMX and XNUMX have to be done on the first Mac-XXX ... And on the last one that appears, I failed there and another thing I failed was to translate the page and then the terminal commands already they varied and did not work.
By the way, in the 0xED program there is no need to search and replace, it can be done by hand. It is useful for the next step of changing the numbers of MacBookAir1,1 etc ...
I hope it works for me, it was perfect for me.

To find out if the Mac is compatible, click on (the left apple above) > about this Mac> system information> hardware> Bluetooth
And there you have to put
            LMP version: 0x6
            Bluetooth LE: yes (supported)
If that appears, it may be useful.
Good luck. All the best !!!

You're welcome!! It did not work for me the first time when changing the binary data with 0xED that you have to be very careful to put everything exactly the same but the second time I did it it did work!

Carmen and Manuel: you are great stars! 🙂
    I don't have a Mac yet but it's a good topic.
    By the way.
Can it be done at once with the ipad 3?
    Greetings.

I can't find the model of the BT 4.0 board for the 27 2010-inch iMac, if someone has the data I would appreciate it.
    Good post.

Good post! nothing about the late 2008 Macbooks, right? I have also looked at "macrumors" but they do not put anything. I think my machine is more than obsolete despite working well with Yosemite. regards!
