Easily convert your movies to iTunes with Handbrake

Using the iPad to watch movies is a joy, but for that it is almost essential to have them on iTunes, and I say almost because there are other solutions, but the best, without a doubt, is to have them in iTunes format. the catalog of movies available in the iTunes Store is very wide, even with original versions, but if you have your own library it is not a question of buying movies that you already have again. It may seem like a drag having to go around converting avi or mkv files to other compatible formats, but the great advantages of doing so outweigh it. That benefits? They can be easily synchronized with our iPad, and they can even be played via streaming without the need to transfer them to our device, and if you have an AppleTV you can watch them on your TV.

There is a free program, Handbrake, available for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux, which performs these tasks perfectly, with very good results. You just have to choose the movie to convert by clicking on "Source", select on the right for which device you want to convert it, and click on Start, it takes care of the rest. The conversion speed will depend on the format in which the film is and its size, some will take a few minutes, especially if they are already encoded in H264, and other very heavy ones can take several hours. The application has support for subtitles, and if you want to modify the conversion options you can do so.

Once you have converted the movie, you just have to drag it to the iTunes window so that it is added to your library, and you can transfer it to your iPad, play it in streaming, use AirPlay to see it on other devices ... You can download Handbrake from its official page. The possibilities that iTunes offers us are fantastic for our multimedia files, even if we have to pay the fee of having to convert them.

True, but you can't use the rest of the iTunes functions, such as AirPlay or Library Sharing

    2.    Luis_Pa said

But you can't enjoy itunes features like AirPlay or streaming from your iPad

The biggest problem with Handbrake is that it does not include the metadata, that if it never fails, I use it when Ivi, Iflick, Subler or Roadmovie (in that order of use) fail, although for me for MKV files the best option is Subler and for avoiding working too much is IVI

iVI is great, but I don't know of a Windows equivalent, and it's paid. I am the one I always use.

    2.    Luis_Pa said

As iVI there are none, that is clear. But this is valid for Windows, and it is free.

I do not know if it will be a problem that my pc is a bit old (dual core 2.0ghz with 4gb of RAM) but, when I convert videos to watch them on the atv or iPad, I notice small micro-cuts in the image and it is very annoying. I have tried avplayer and handbrake, am I doing something wrong?

    1.    Luis_Pa said

I shouldn't… I've converted so many and there have been no problems, what conversion profile do you use?

Can someone give me information on what would be the best configuration for the iPad 3 and ATV 3 ...
    Thank you

    1.    Luis_Pa said

You have a specific profile for AppleTV 3 in the application itself.

  5.   Octavio said

When I use that profile, I watch the movies on appleTV, however, they can't be seen on iTunes, what should I do ????

Do you use Windows? You probably don't have Quicktime installed

Good night, anyone know if you can create a list of movies to convert with handbreak? It is to avoid doing it one by one.

    1.    Luis Padilla said

Sure, you can create a work queue
