Despite the growth of Apple News, revenue for publishers remains minimal

Apple News

In recent years, we have seen how Apple is focusing part of its efforts on improving and fine-tuning the News platform, a news platform that is currently only available in three countries and that at the moment, it seems that does not plan its international expansion, at least until Apple is clear on how to manage it.

As we can read in the latest Slate report, despite the success that this platform has had among publishers, through which they could obtain new income, they are still not a source of money that deserves the dedication that is taking them.

According to Slate, Apple has increased the audience it reaches by putting it almost on the same level as Facebook and Google in terms of traffic. Since 2017, the number of page views on Apple News has tripled, and the app has recently overtaken Facebook as the top source of readers.

While Google and Facebook send readers directly to the publisher's website, Apple News does not, as it keeps the reader within its own application where the ads were managed by Apple, but for a few months, they also show Google ads.

According to Product Manager Slate, the company You get virtually no income from the news you show on Apple News. In fact, he claims that he makes more money from a single article that gets 50.000 visits to his website than from the 54 million visits his content has had on Apple News in the last year.

But it seems that Apple is planning make changes to the platform so publishers can get the extra income they are looking for and last May announced a deal with DoubleClick and Google to run ads on Apple News. Apple is also rumored to be trying to implement a subscription service that would include both newspapers and magazines.

Apple News has been in operation for 3 years, and since then it has attracted the attention of major media outlets, media that have begun to get tired of betting on this platform, a platform that initially, and according to Apple, would be an extra source of income for publishers.
