They develop a method to measure blood pressure with a video or selfie

In a relatively short time Apple managed to get into a device like the Apple Watch ECG function and technology continues to advance to deliver greater health-focused capabilities to our mobile devices. A few days ago there was talk of the possibility that the Apple Watch is capable of measuring blood glucose with a non-invasive method and today we see that they are developing a method to measure blood pressure simply by taking a video or a selfie with the iPhone.

This would be something really new and the University of Toronto, in Canada, and the University of Hangzhou, in China, are developing this software. Researchers work in functions to measure blood pressure by analyzing with an artificial intelligence algorithm the video signal captured by the camera of our iPhone or any mobile device in just 30 seconds.

Dr. Kang Lee, is one of the main researchers on the project at the University of Toronto and explains:

High blood pressure is one of the leading contributors to cardiovascular disease, one of the leading causes of death and disability. To control and prevent them, regular monitoring of blood pressure is essential. If future studies confirm our results and show that this method can be used to measure blood pressures that are clinically high or low, we will have the option of a non-contact, non-invasive method to monitor blood pressures conveniently, perhaps at any time and anywhere

It is too early to launch this technology on the market but it is being worked on

And here there are a series of problems that we have to take into account when making these measurements, such as good lighting at the time of measurement or the characteristic of the person who is being read, which may fail depending on the skin color (lighter, darker, etc) and it is necessary to continue investigating to adjust these anomalies detected in the first real tests. Although it is true that this method seems to work in 95% of cases in which it has been tested.

The technology we cannot say is ready to be launched, but there is an application for iPhone and Android which is based on the same measurement method that this working group is investigating and that for now does not measure blood pressure but does measure heart rate and stress level. The means of detecting problems in our health continue to advance and this is a clear example of this with really advanced research that may end up reaching our hands sooner than we think.
