FaceTime will modify our pupils to maintain eye contact in iOS 14

Sometimes the final versions of the operating systems are not the same as the betas tested in the weeks before the final release. An example of this is iOS 13. Throughout the betas we were able to enjoy an option that Apple called "Attention correction." It was an option that could be activated on some iPhones to modify our eyes and pupils in real time while we were on a FaceTime video call. to simulate eye contact with the interlocutor and solve one of the problems that exist with this type of calls. Finally, that option was not in the final version of iOS 13, but if it is in iOS 14 under the name of "Eye contact".

iOS 14 will improve eye contact in FaceTime by modifying our pupils

Let's put ourselves in a situation. When we make a video call or take a selfie, we try to look at the center of the screen, which is where the interlocutor is or the image we want to take if we take a selfie. However, for the interlocutor, in the case of a video call, it also does the same. Therefore we will see a person whose eyes look down, because instead of looking at the camera they look at our face. This is uncomfortable because not maintaining eye contact with the interlocutor it makes the conversation less natural and less fluid.

To solve this problem Apple used augmented reality and artificial intelligence making use, in part, of ARKit to modify our eyes and pupils in real time making it appear that they are looking at the camera instead of at the screen. We saw this option in beta 3 of iOS 13. However, we could not enjoy it in the final version. But iOS 14 includes the option finally to which they have called "Eye contact" under the following explanation:

FaceTime can make video calling more natural by helping you make eye contact even when looking at the screen instead of the camera.

In addition, iOS 14 brings other improvements in FaceTime that are worth noting:

  • Picture in Picture: At last we can leave the video call and keep the image thanks to the integration of Picture in Picture in all iOS 14.
  • Sign language: Using visual recognition technology, FaceTime is able to detect when a person is using sign language and will give them a greater presence in the video call for deaf people who cannot follow the conversation.
  • 1080p quality: All those devices that are capable of supporting it will be able to transmit and receive images up to 1080p.
