Files, new dock, Drag and Drop and other novelties of iOS 11 on the iPad

We are still trying to digest the immense rain of news that Apple did not offer yesterday in the inaugural keynote of the Worldwide Developer Conference WWDC 2017. Two and a half hours of pure spectacle in which we could see renewed MacBook Pro, an updated 12-inch MacBook , updated iMac models, a new and amazing iMac Pro, the new iPad Pro and of course, many new features at the software level, especially regarding the next version of the apple mobile operating system, iOS 11.

iOS 11 is already available for developers, very soon it will be for users registered in the public beta program and already in another, for all users. iOS 11 arrives full of news, with a renewed Control Center, new interface in the App Store and much more. However now we are going to stop at iOS 11 for the iPad and that is, In its version for the tablet, iOS 11 moves away from the iPhone with specific characteristics that we are all looking forward to seeing.

With iOS 11, the iPad is more of a work tool than ever

After presenting the much-rumored 10,5-inch iPad Pro and the renewed versions of the larger iPad Pro, the 12,9 ″ one that I like so much, the moment arrived that many of us were waiting with real impatience since they jumped yesterday morning the first leaks on the net: What's New Specific to iOS 11 for the iPad. And we don't just talk about Files  and the new function Drag and Drop, but a good handful of news that will largely remind us of macOS, but in a device as impressive as the iPad.

New Dock and new App Switcher

The new iOS 11 Dock on the iPad is an adapted reflection of the macOS Dock, and whoever says they don't lie like a scoundrel. Now we can include many more applications in the Dock, and it's much smarter because it "changes as you work" in the sense that it will show us the applications we have used most recently on the right side of it and, as in macOS, the last app that we have used on our other computers.

On the other hand, the new dock is always at hand because, when we have an app open, all you have to do is slide your finger up from the bottom of the screen to make the dock "float" over the app.

In addition, we can take an app from the Dock, drag it to the "desktop" of the iPad, and it will automatically be displayed on a split screen.

And as for the exchange of applications, better known as App Switcher, it has also been completely redesigned to show us much better the apps that we are using and in new Control Center.

Drag and Drop

Native support for the new feature Drag and Drop (drag and drop) is another of the biggest new features of iOS 11 on the iPad. From now on we can drag and drop files, images, web pages and content from one application to another.

New Files app

We continue with the news because the drag and drop function makes even more sense with the new app Archives, a sort of "Finder" adapted to the specificity of the iPad and iOS 11 that will make life much easier for us. Apple, finally, responds to a demand from users that already has years.

La app Files unifies in one place all the files we have on our iPad, but also those from other cloud services such as DropBox, Box and of course, iCloud Drive; In addition, it will show us the most recent files, and in combination with "Drag and Drop", we can drag and drop from "Files" to any other place. It's just GREAT.

QuickType Keyboard

iOS 11 makes us more productive on the iPad, and if more tests are still needed, there is the new QuickType Keyboard, a keyboard in which, unlike the one we have up to iOS 10, unifies letters, numbers, symbols and punctuation marks; just slide a key down and choose what you need, without changing from one keyboard to another.

Notes on the fly

Now the Apple Pencil on the iPad Pro It is compatible with more applications, such as Mail, but without a doubt, one of the things that I liked the most is that just touch the lock screen and start typing for our ideas to go directly to Notes. From now on it will be impossible to forget our best ideas.

These are the main novelties of iOS 11 on the iPad, but surely as we explore the first beta versions, we discover something else.

I have been looking for the option to be able to add the third party services to Files, but have not been successful, do you know where they should be added from?
    Thank you!

Hello Manuel. I have not found them either, but we are in day 1 of beta 1 hehe, that is, it is very early and surely that option is not activated yet (that, or it is super hidden). Anyway it is something that was confirmed and was seen in yesterday's Keynote, so it will be. Let's hope! Greetings and thank you very much for participating.

Thank you very much for the answer José, I consider myself almost an expert, but I was doing some research and at least on the Dropbox and One Drive sites, they mention that shortly the support for Files will be available, so the safest thing is that in the second or third beta, let's have it!

Deluxe!!!! Surely they will be quick to provide us with that compatibility, I am looking forward to starting to use only the Files app. Thanks for the info Manuel.

Although in the WWDC ipads they do not appear in the first beta. And something beautiful from apple as always the 12 ”ipad that is one year old is the only one that does not accept the new keyboard with the signs. Ha! Amazing…..
