Remembrance, finally, the password manager I wanted

Remembe app

Remembear is the app to manage and create passwords from the creators of TunnelBear, one of the best VPN services I have ever tried. When I found out about its existence, it was a matter of minutes to test it and a matter of hours to have it as the main app to manage my passwords.

I've always been a true believer that it is necessary to have a password manager in your life. For three reasons:

  1. Apple passwords are very convenient, too, so much so that they are not protected beyond that with the code of our iPhone (I do not use a simple code, but most of the people do and, in addition, they share it with friends and family without problem).
  2. We cannot use the same password for everything, it is not safe, and neither can we remember them all. Therefore, we need to keep them in a safe place.
  3. The most secure passwords are completely random. and, for this, we can type like a cat walking on the keyboard or we can use a password creator (which is normally integrated into password management services).

It is a market that has brought a lot of competition. LastPass, 1Password, OneSafe, etc. But none of them had convinced me until now.

The first thing is that I think you have to pay for an app like this. A good service requires investment and if you, as a customer, are not paying and they do not have advertising, where do they get the money from? Think that in that app you will have the passwords of the bank, PayPal, etc. In other words, access to your money.

The second is that apps need not be more than a two-column spreadsheet. A column with "Web / service" and another with "Password". What else for? Before the fever of these services, this is what many of us did, even with a password in the Excel file or hide it on our Mac by putting a point in front of it.

Having said that, LastPass is free and 1Password stopped being a simple and easy to use password manager a long time ago. Every time I have tried to join 1Password fans, I have been overwhelmed by the number of features, services and options that, why deny it, I do not need. They just complicate something for me that is as simple as a post-it on the wall.

That's why i used OneSafe, the simplest of all and a moderate single payment. But they are worrying about looking more and more like 1Password, with a rather childish design, and they are not worrying about improving what really fails. To this day I still do not know if my passwords are in iCloud or OneSafe servers, and I have to log in to both to see them all, without the possibility of reverting it.

And it came Rememberate, which fulfills my two premises. It will be paid, it is not yet because it is in phase beta (I encourage you to join the beta as they have promised special prices to beta testers) and it is very simple.

It has a version for iOS and for macOS. Both with the same design and the same functions. When trying to access the passwords, a very nice bear confirms that it is you by asking for the password (or Touch ID / Face ID) and, when accessing, we find a list with all the passwords. Simple as that. A search bar and options to sort passwords and you're done.

Outside of this screen we have a single basic menu with "help", "settings", "add a new device", etc. The configuration of new devices is very simple. It uses an emergency system in case we forget the master password (as 1Password and others have been doing) and it also includes a extension for Safari on macOS and iOS. I have never gotten used to this kind of extensions, I see them more annoying than functional. I always end up opening the app and copying the password I need. In fact, it seems safer to me, although this is very subjective.

Of course, all passwords are encrypted and synchronized on all our devices (including Windows and Android if we need it) through Remembear's servers.

Being in beta phase, I have encountered an error like what is done log out on any of my devices, or some password is duplicated, but in no case have I lost information or it has stopped working.

The app also has a spectacular password creator. Up to 50 characters, being able to choose the number of digits, letters and symbols. Or, if we prefer, use words.

The interface, from its icon to displaying passwords, is pleasant, clean and intuitive. It's a smooth app on my iPhone 7 Plus and also on my Macs (10 years old), which is great for a beta. Plus, bears are really cool.

It is not known when it will be released publicly or the cost it will have, but the app is fully functional today (I no longer use another) and the beta is completely public.

If you are in the same situation, maybe we have found our definitive app. If you are already loyal to a password manager, I am glad you use it. And, if you don't use a password manager, I encourage you to do so. With the little effort of using it, you will be rewarded with security, convenience and never having to hit "I forgot my password" again.

Thanks for the discovery, the truth is that I did not know it and I really like trying apps. I use 1Password I believe that since it came out, and since it is a subject in which a lot of private information is handled ... I don't know if it would change everything to this new one, but I have already downloaded it and I am going to test it.
What I do not see is that we are going to have a discount, if it says for those who use their other VPN App, but for the beta of this I have not seen anything.

Thanks Carlos! For that we are. Look at "Why should I use Remembear?" in the help section. They say: "For the wonderful early adopters and bug reporters using RememBear Beta, you'll unlock a generous discount towards the premium subscription which we'll announce shortly."

I hope it is clearer to you now! Of course moving all the password information is a curious task, I have done it several times and I hope that with Remembe it was the last

Is 1password complicated? What there is to read. I do not remember the name of another similar to rember that came out a couple of years ago and that left the passwords and its users with their ass in the air.

You buy 1Password once and take it by bag, I have it for mac, iOS and android, zero problems, everything synchronized, and I will not have to pay every month or year. I don't use the annual 1password option in the cloud, I'm not interested.

This app saves the passwords in a cloud, like the one that fell, 1password creates my password vault on my computer, I synchronize it if I want with icloud, drive, dropbox or whatever I want, but if I don't want to, it doesn't leave My computer.

You don't use browser plugins, don't you see them useful? Well, you tell me everything, if I want a password manager to go cut and cut what a silly thing. I don't know if remember has the login function from the link when you do the registration.

Is that 1password apart from doing what it does very well, it does many more and very practical things. In a password entry, for example the password of the social security certificate, you can even save the certificate file, so when I format and start I have the vault of basic things, that's what I call it, and there I have some very important passwords with files of licenses etc. Add custom fields, notes, apart from the presets for cards, servers etc. When you work carrying many websites, you create your entry, you save the info or even the mail file with the contract data ... buff is that 1password can be a simple password manager, or a system pass to maintain order and safely .

And this seems simple to you because they have just launched it, do not worry that as One Safe they will already be putting the amount of functions that 1password has, because users require it, look at the forums.

Excellent application. The important thing is regarding the ease of use. I hope they do not incorporate many more tools because they confuse things for people who do not understand as much computing as I do. I thank you for sharing it.
    Greetings from Chilean Patagonia.
Note: I forgot to mention that I have been using Apple since 1983, living almost all the company's processes. I still have two old Macintosh computers.

Hi José Camel! Thanks for reading! I also hope they do not lose that simplicity, although their other app (TunnelBear) is still as easy to use as the first day -if not more- so I think it is part of their philosophy as a company.

This week I want to share a couple more somewhat unknown apps, stay tuned.

      (I wasn't even born in '93).

If 1PW seems complex to you, use LastPast, which is free, but if you want to pay, they also have a paid version with more options (which you really won't need). For me it is the most functional today, while, for me, it is better designed than 1password.

As for not using extensions in the browsers, I honestly do not understand you, if this is precisely what guarantees a good use of the keys (by not typing them, pasting them, etc.) and, above all, you literally forget the keys, which is without a doubt the best policy you can follow, that is, the best key is the one you do not remember (and that you have generated with the app)

Hello! The first thing you recommend (using Lastpass) contradicts my opinion of extensions. Lastpass, when testing it, I realized that it only has an extension for Safari on Mac, it does not have an app, so it makes no sense to me.

In terms of security, I do not know what is worse, copy and paste from the app each time (something that, honestly, it does not cost me anything to do on my Mac) or that browsing through an extension has access to your passwords . I think it's a matter of taste, for me using cmd + space, calling Remembear doesn't cost me anything. Being an independent app I have it set to block the app when it is inactive or if the Mac goes to sleep (and I have a nice habit of leaving the Mac to sleep when I walk away).

And no, I don't know any of my passwords - just the teacher - they are all generated by Remembear.
