iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite has been a breakthrough for Apple in integrating its mobile and computer operating systems. Continuity and Handoff are two of the great protagonists, but there are also small improvements that, without being revolutionary, do make things much easier for those of us who have several Apple devices. One of them is Instant Hotspot, a function with which you can use the data connection of your iPhone or iPad on your Mac almost automatically, without having to configure anything. But some users are having problems and this option does not appear, so we give you a few tips so that everything works as it should.
Compatible devices
- iPhone - iPhone 5 and later
- iPad - iPad 4 and later (obviously only models with 4G connectivity)
- iPod touch - iPod touch 5
- iMac - as of 2012
- MacBook Air - as of 2012
- MacBook Pro - as of 2012
- Mac Pro - as of 2013
- Mac mini - as of 2012
If your devices are in this list, you use the same iCloud account on both and your data plan includes Tethering (internet sharing) then this Instant Hotspot option should work. But as we all know, automatic is not always that simple. Follow the steps below to get it:
- You must have activated the bluetooth and WiFi of both devices
- Restart both devices, sometimes this simple step solves the problem
- Change the name of your iPhone or iPad. Also a bit illogical but it works. Go to Settings> General> Information> Name and modify the name of your device.
- Reset the network settings. Go to Settings> General> Reset> Reset Network Settings. Keep in mind that this step will erase all the keys of the Wi-Fi networks that you have stored in your iCloud keychain.
