Four tricks to improve facial recognition or Face ID

Speed up Face ID unlocking

It has been one of the great novelties of the iPhoneX, a function that is exclusively for the moment, and that as always has unleashed controversy from the first moment. Accustomed to the reliability and speed of Touch ID, many iPhone users were skeptical of the implementation of a new facial recognition system as a security mechanism for our device.

The reality is that Face ID has proven to be reliable and fast, but it has its drawbacks, like any system. Remember that Touch ID, for example, does not work with gloves, something annoying when in winter we take our iPhone out of our pocket with our gloves on. But is there a way to improve facial recognition to mitigate these drawbacks, and after a long time of use I will tell you the tricks that seem most useful to me.

Scan your face with glasses

If you wear glasses, or frequently wear sunglasses, my advice is to scan your face with your glasses on. Even if sometimes you do not take them to unlock the device, you will not have any problem. However if you do it the other way around, scarce your load without glasses, sometimes with glasses it may not recognize you well.

Distance is very important

Many users complain that their faces are not recognized in bed ... the problem is distance. Face ID requires you to have the iPhone at a minimum distance, since if your face is very close, it cannot capture all the points that it uses to establish facial recognition well. The normal distance is as if you are reading a book, or something else, but never less. Also remember that it does not work with the iPhone in landscape mode, you must put it vertically.

You must look at your iPhone

It is an essential requirement to be able to unlock using Face ID: you must look at the iPhone. If you do not see your eyes well, because you have them closed or because you are looking at another place, it will not be unlocked. It is a security system to prevent unlocks without your authorization, for example, when you are asleep. You can always disable the option "Require attention for Face ID" in "Settings> Face ID and code", but it is not recommended at all since you would be lowering the security level of the recognition system a lot.

Make him learn to recognize you

When Face ID does not recognize you, it asks you for the manual unlock code. This may seem like a drag, but it helps her learn new features of your face. When it doesn't recognize you, waste a couple of seconds manually entering your code and it will capture the new elements that it has collected before to add them to your face, and little by little it will learn to recognize you with different elements. Using this system you can even end up recognizing two very similar faces, as we have seen in videos of brothers or sons who could unlock their relatives' iPhone.

Move the iPhone while it recognizes you

This I have tried on occasions but I can't say it works, although Reddit and other forums claim that it helps make facial scanning more reliable. When the iPhone is recognizing your face, move the iPhone smoothly to make a 3D scan of your face. As I say, I have not checked it but they claim that it works, so it does not hurt to try it.

Thanks for the information Luis. In the second paragraph of the article the word "pity" appears, I think it should say "landscape".

    Greetings 😉
