Download free ePub from the best websites

ePub-free

The eBooks are all the rage, and the iPad is a device increasingly used for this purpose, especially since the new design of the lighter and thinner iPad Air and the launch of the iPad Mini Retina, with an exceptional screen and a size and weight more than suitable for use as a 'pocket book'. The available catalog of books in electronic format is very extensive. What are the books in ePub format? Where can I download them for free? How can I easily add them to my iPad? We will explain all this to you in the following article.

Books in ePub format

ePub It is the standard electronic book format. It is the format in which books are downloaded if you purchase them directly from the iBooks Store, Apple's electronic book store, which you can access from any iOS device (iPad, iPhone and iPod touch) or Mac with OS X Mavericks installed. Books you buy from Google Play Books, Google's book store, which also has applications for iOS devices, are also downloaded directly in this format. ePub however is not a format that you can use with Amazon's Kindle devices. Although the company has assured that it would support this format, it has not yet done so. Anyway it is not complicated to convert the ePub to a Kindle-compatible format.

¿What are the advantages of books in ePub? You are probably familiar with PDF files, a very widespread format that can be used in many e-books, including the iPad and iPhone, since iBooks is compatible. However, the PDF format has a drawback, and that is that the text is distributed in a fixed way, that is, the sheet is as it is, and it looks the same regardless of the screen. The ePub format, however, allows the text to adapt to the screen, so that on devices with smaller screens it can be read without problems, and on those with a larger screen it is practically the same as the original book. Look at the image on these lines to understand it well. It is the same sheet of a book viewed on three devices with different screens.

Download ePub for free

We already know what an ePub book is, we know that we can read it from our Mac, iPad and iPhone, but where do I download it from? Or better yet, where can I download it for free? Let's focus on three different sources: IBooks Store, Google Play Books Store and download from websites.

IBooks store

iBooks-free

The iBooks application for iPhone, iPad and Mac OS X has its built-in book store. In iBooks Store you can find the most important titles of the moment and the classics of always, and although many people do not know it, has a vast catalog of free books that you can download from the application itself. And when I speak of free books I am not talking about "garbage" far from it. You can find very interesting current books, and timeless classics like Dracula, Hamlet or Robinson Crusoe. There are books of all genres: fiction, romance, biographies, Apple user guides, politics, comics and graphic novels, etc.

To access this section you just have to click on the banner that Apple dedicates on the cover of the iBooks Store. All the books you find in that section are completely free, and the advantage of using this method is that you can download it on all your devices and synchronize the reading on all of them, that is, you can stop reading on your iPad and continue from the same point on your iPhone while you go to work.

Google Play Books Store

The Google store also has a wide catalog of free books, although not a section dedicated to them. You should go browsing the store and look at those that are specified as "FREE" which is not a major inconvenience. What can be annoying is that you cannot buy these books from the Play Books application that you can download from the App Store, but you will have to do it from your computer, accessing the google book store for which you will need a Google Play account, buy the book and once purchased it will appear in the Play Books application on your iPhone and iPad. As with Apple iBooks, all the books you buy will appear on all your devices with the application installed.

Páginas web

There are countless websites that offer the possibility of download books in ePub format for free. It's easy to find pages by doing a simple Google search. We offer you a list with the most complete ones, of course all legal. Some of them only offer free books, others allow you to buy paid books and some free.

  • Library.com: It has some free books, and others that you can download for free, read and pay for them only if you liked them.
  • 1book1euro.com: a website that allows you to download books after a donation you make to Save The Children. They suggest that we make a donation of € 1 for each book downloaded, but the decision is made by each one.
  • feedbooks.com: Very complete. They have paid books, but many others are free. Highly recommended.
  • virtualbook.org- A community of writers who offer their books completely free to readers.
  • Project Gutenberg: a huge amount of free books. The link leads directly to those who are in Spanish.

Transfer ePub books to your iPad

There are countless methods to transfer ePub to your iPad and iPhone. If you have downloaded them from the Apple or Google stores there is no problem, since with their respective applications you can always re-download them to any device that has the same account configured. But if you download web pages, things change. Nevertheless not at all complicated getting to read the ePub on your iPad. We offer you two alternatives that in my opinion are faster and more comfortable than the official option (drag the ePub to iTunes and synchronize your iPad).

Send the ePub to your email account

ePub-email

Perhaps the simplest method. Send yourself an email that includes as an attachment the ePub you want to add to your iPad. Open the mail from your iPad, click on the attachment and you will see that it gives you the option to open it with iBooks. You will have the book ready to read on your iPad.

Use Dropbox to save ePub

Another very practical option is use some cloud storage system, like Dropbox. When you download an ePub from a website, you just have to put it in the Dropbox folder and use the application on your iPad or iPhone to add the book to iBooks. Select the file, click on the square and arrow icon (at the top), select the "Open in" option and select iBooks. The book is now added to iBooks.

With these tips you can surely create your own collection of books to enjoy reading this summer at the beach or pool. Recommendations are allowed.

    Hi Luis, good afternoon:
First of all, I wanted to congratulate you on your detailed article on the ePub format and I hope you continue to publish more content about electronic books because, the truth is, it is greatly appreciated.
I wanted to ask you a question: when you use the iBooks Author tool to create electronic books, they can only be read on an iPad, a fact that greatly detracts from Apple's competitiveness in ebook sales. Is there a different way or do you always recommend the ePub? I am planning to publish a travel magazine and I do not know what is more recommended, since I see the most suitable ePub format for textbooks type novels, essays, etc., while, with iBooks Author, although its format can only be read in the indicated device, looks more beautiful. What do you think?
Greetings and thanks for your information.
    Angel

I don't have much experience with iBooks Author beyond trying it out of curiosity a couple of times. It is an excellent application to create books very easily, but it has the great limitation of not allowing the content to be exported to a format other than PDF. If your book is intended to be read with the iPad, it is your application. If not ... I think you should better use Pages, it is almost as simple and it does allow you to create ePubs.
