Glympse allows us to share our position in real time and with any platform

Glympse

Any iPhone user needs to know at least a little about the Find My Friends application. With this function, as long as we allow it, we can know where our contacts are and our contacts will be able to know where we are at all times, but there are two things that make the application not perfect: it will determine where we are every X long-time and only is available for iOS. If we want a more complete option that we can also use in non-Apple products, what we are looking for is called Glympse.

But what is Glympse? It is an application that will allow us to share our position or see where our contacts are at all times and in near real time. Although this of seeing the position in real time is not very important if what we are looking for is the certainty that someone knows where we are in the event of an accident, it is very good, for example, if what we want is for someone to see which route we are doing with the bike.

We can see the Glympse information without registration and without installing the app

As a mountain bike fan, I've been looking for an application that would allow me to do both of the above: on the one hand, that whoever I want can see where I'm going at all times. On the other, that If I have an accident, know where I am, which reminds me a bit of the movie 127 hours that tells the story of Aron Ralston, who went out alone to play sports and got into trouble for not telling anyone where he was going.

Regarding the function of showing our position in real time, what the users with whom we share our location will see will be similar to what we see when using a GPS map application, that is, an arrow that moves across the map. Whoever is watching where we are going can switch the map view to satellite mode and will also see an estimate of how fast we are going at all times. Undoubtedly, this is especially good if what we want is to go with the bike or go hiking and someone see what route we do (to give envy, for example 😉).

But what I like the most about Glympse and the reason I write about this app and not another is that no registration needed. The only thing necessary is that the user who broadcasts his position has the application installed. At the moment we want someone to see where we are, we will do the following:

  1. Logically, the first step is to download and open the application.
  2. Next, we touch on the blue circle that has inside the G.
  3. We tap on Share.
  4. Now we will see the screen that really matters, where we can configure:
    • For: here we will put who we want to share our position with. See step 5.
    • Destination: in case we want to say where we are going.
    • Message: in case we want to explain a little about what our excursion is about.
    • Time we will share the position: we will rotate the white point on the G to determine how long we will be diffusing our position.

Share with Glympse

  1. By touching the plus symbol (+) in the «To» section we can choose the medium or with whom to share our position. Perhaps the simplest thing is to choose "Copy to clipboard", which will generate a link that we can manually paste into any social network, which can include Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp or an email. We can also share directly to Evernote, Twitter, Facebook or use a Glympse Tag, which means that our route would be public and anyone looking for that tag could know where we are going.
  2. Once the sharing method has been chosen, we tap on the arrow to go back.
  3. Finally, we tap on Send. Do not forget that if you have chosen only the clipboard option, for someone to see you you have to send the link manually.
Glympse sharing options

To access this option, you have to slide the three lines to the left

At the bottom right of the app there is a box with three horizontal lines. Here is a menu in which we see who we are following or our own profile. From here too we can stop sharing when we see fit.

Glympse also us allows you to ask to see the location of any of our contacts, something we can do if in step 3 we choose the option «Ask» instead of «Share». Personally, I'm not so amused about this anymore, but I can imagine situations where it's not such a bad idea.

Glympse via web

Some of you may be thinking that I am talking about Glympse because its developers have asked us to do so, but I will tell you in all honesty that this is not the case. As I have explained, I have been riding the bike with some friends for a long time and many times we investigate new paths. Glympse lets us know that if something happens to us, the users with whom we share our location will end up knowing where we are. And it won't be necessary for us to bother them by asking them to install an app; you can see where we are via the web just by clicking on the link, as you can see in the previous screenshot.

So now you know. If you are looking for a way for someone to know where you are for whatever reason, Glympse is the best option for allowing us to share it with any user regardless of what device they are using and for do not require registration. Who gives more?

Pablo, why are you complaining that Find My Friends is only available for iOS? Have you even managed to realize that you are writing this article to Actualidad iPhone?

Hi Carl. NONE of my family uses iOS. Most of my friends DO NOT USE IOS. If I want to use Find my friends so that my family knows where I am or my friends see which route I take ... as you will understand, it does not work for me. Almost 0. In the best case scenario, I would have to annoy them by telling them that they will create an Apple account so that they can see it via the web.

I know where I am writing, at some point I have managed to find out, but courteous does not take away the courage, and if I want them to know where I am, the best is a multiplatform application. And even better, no registration is required. I think everything is explained in the post and I literally do not understand that you do not understand it, apart from the fact that it is a kind of tantrum of the type "others, let them row."

      A greeting.

The application seems great to me and is available on both iOS and Android. I started using it since WhatsApp started failing to share location. As Mr. Pablo said, it is practical because those who are going to see your position do not need to have the App; A message arrives and opens the browser with the link and that's it. I recommend it 100%
