Google Maps comes to CarPlay with iOS 12

CarPlay Google Maps Waze

Apple has presented iOS 12 at WWDC and is full of news for this new operating system for the iPhone, iPad and the car, because there are many new features in Apple CarPlay.

Apple CarPlay has been limited to using Apple Maps since its launch in 2014 - 4 years ago - but today Google Maps has arrived at CarPlay.

It was a short ad with no images beyond the Google Maps icon on the car display, but surely more than one receives it with open arms.

The eternal struggle between Google Maps and Apple Maps seems to have reached a time of equal opportunity in Apple's operating system. Those who joined the Google camp will now be able to enjoy Google Maps in their cars, which, remember, there are already more than 400 models Compatible.

But just one image is enough for us to know that it does not stay on Google Maps. CarPlay will now also allow you to use Waze. The Waze app is one of the most used maps and traffic apps in the world, and it also has a loyal mass of fans who use it on a daily basis. Despite being owned by Google, Waze has continued to operate independently and it's great news that it also supports CarPlay.

The announcement also makes it clear that we can use more third-party map apps, like the one we see in the image, so we can assume that this option of using maps in CarPlay will be open to application developers to give directions directly on the car screen.

Remember that the CarPlay update is joint to that of the iPhone and you can use Google Maps, Waze or your trusted browser once we have iOS 12 on our iPhone.
