Google will remove support for Exchange in its Gmail accounts (goodbye push notifications on iOS)

Google removes Exchange

Without a doubt, they have been very active weeks in Mountain View, giving us several updates to Google applications for iOS and even the expected launch of Google Maps for iPhone. However, not everything could be good news, and the search engine company has announced through its official blog that they will make a winter cleaning, With which will discontinue some apps or services in the coming weeks.

This would not be a cover story if it weren't for the fact that among the services that Google has decided to unsubscribe is the support for Microsoft Exchange protocol for Google Sync to be done next January 30. If you wonder how it can affect iPad users, this let me tell you a lot, since this protocol is the one that most of the iOS users use alternatively to configure our accounts. Gmail with push notifications for mail, contacts and calendar.

In this way, all Gmail users on an iPhone or iPad will have to configure their accounts now as IMAP, which is the official method that iOS offers us, which would cause us to have to refresh every certain time our account to download emails, with the inconvenience or little functionality that this can mean. The currently active accounts will continue to work without problem, like those of Google Apps, however apparently if you want to register a new device you will have to do it via IMAP (and if I change the device with the same account, will it remain active? the information is not very clear about it).

Fortunately, the latest Gmail update for iOS does include push notifications, but what about contacts and calendars? Fortunately in my case, I stopped synchronizing the calendar and contacts with my Gmail account a long time ago, since I migrated everything to iCloud so in that aspect it will not affect me, but like many, the fact of no longer having Push notifications in the native email client will be a small inconvenience, I am not used to using the Gmail application and there is definitely a need for immediacy when receiving emails.

I do not believe that Apple implements a medium or long-term method to solve this problem, could we be facing a revenge by Google or a way to bring more users to its official mail application? Now we only have to get used to having notifications every 15 minutes or use another application.

The news is not as rigorous as it should be. If you inform yourself correctly, Google will cancel the service, yes, but for those users who already have the system active, it will continue to work. This termination of service will only apply to NEW users

I suppose you mean that the support will continue but for Google Apps accounts, although if I miss mentioning it I think that most use common and current Gmail accounts.

Example: I have an iPhone configured with my gmail accounts in exchange; If after January 30 I buy an iPad, on that device I will NOT be able to configure these exchange accounts?

So there is no problem, since I have an iPhone I have always used the Gmail configuration that comes by default and I have always received emails every hour.

What a chore…. I have my Gmail accounts, including those at work, and I can't be without Push… it's essential for my work. What a chore, to say the least ... Thank you Google for fucking us a little more ...

Given this, there is nothing left but to migrate everything to iCloud and also forward the emails from GMail to iCloud to be able to have push notifications. I think there is no other choice.

According to the little information that Google has given so far, the service will continue to work for active accounts on our devices and for Google App accounts for business, government and universities, we have to wait to see if it will be valid when we change devices (in my case I am about to buy an iPhone 5 to retire my old iPhone 4). So if you continue with the same device at the moment you do not have to worry.

I stopped synchronizing with icloud the moment I went from ios 4 to 5 and I found that because the update had not been done correctly I lost a large part of my contacts, that is, for me the push notifications are not important but synchronization of contacts and calendar with gmail, which is very safe and does not give any problem with synchronization
