You have a 300Mbps fiber connection, a state-of-the-art computer and a fabulous router that is just 3 meters from your computer, but nevertheless the internet is very slow. Calls to the operator, the technician who visits you at home to check your connection and everything is going perfectly, however your WiFi connection is fatal, not only on your computer, but also on your iPad, your iPhone, etc. Before going crazy and spending a good handful of euros to change the router, have you checked that the channel on which it broadcasts is the most appropriate? The saturation of networks in your area causes interference to spoil the best possible internet connection, and the solution is very simple and also you do not need any payment application because OS X gives you the necessary tools. We explain how to solve your problems and choose the best possible channel so that your connection is optimal.
If you live in a block of flats like me, the list of available WiFi networks may be as long as mine, or even longer. This means that your computer receives countless interferences that make your own network not received with sufficient quality. If your router allows it, you can choose a 5GHz band that has less interference, but they are even beginning to proliferate and are not as "clean" as before. Choosing a channel that is free (or at least not saturated) is the best option to instantly improve your internet connection. To do this, we are going to open the OS X Wireless Diagnostic application, which we achieve by pressing the «Alt» key on our Mac while we click on the WiFi icon.
As you can see, the information that OS X offers us when doing this is much greater and the option to «Open Wireless Diagnostics». We click on that option and we wait.
A window will appear to which we will not pay the slightest attention. In the upper bar, click on «Window> Explore» and the window that appears is the one we have to pay attention to.
There are all the WiFi networks that we have at our fingertips, but most importantly, in the left column it shows us the optimal channels to use in the 2,4GHz and 5GHz band. Those are the ones that have the least interference and therefore the ones that we must select in our router. Now we only have to access the router configuration and choose them so that everything works as it should.
