How to make and restore backups of Cydia and its applications

PKGBackup

One of the many questions that you ask us when a new version of iOS and Jailbreak comes out is how you can make a backup of the Cydia applications so that you do not have to install everything manually when restoring the device. There are many options in Cydia that allow it, but after several years of using PKGBackup, for updates, reliability and ease of use is the application that I always recommend. For those of you who do not know it, we will show you how it works and what options it offers us.

Settings-PKGBackup

PKGBackup is only available in Cydia, of course, and can be downloaded from the BigBoss repo, priced at $ 9,99. Yes, it is a high price for a Cydia application, but since I did my first jailbreak back in iOS 4 all the updates to the application have been completely free, and it has been updated a lot, so it is worth it. Although it can be a bit confusing for the first time user, it really works very simple. Before executing it, we must go to the system settings, and in the PKGBackup menu select those options that we want. It is advisable to activate those that appear in the image (the three screenshots on the left) so that everything goes well, leaving the rest of the options for more advanced users. Once configured, we can run the application and configure the rest of the options from within, such as where we want to upload the backup, with many options available (Dropbox, Box, SugarSync ...)

PKGBackup-1

We have everything configured and we can proceed to perform the backup for the first time. We have the option to make a quick copy (Quick Backup) or configure what we want to copy and what not. For the latter, click on "Backup" and then on "Details". Then a new window will appear with different tabs. On the one hand the applications and tweaks (Packages) on the other the repos or Cydia sources that we have added (Sources). If we go to the Files and Other tab (at the bottom) there are even more options that we can include in the backup or not. If you take a look at these tabs you will see that the configuration options are endless, impossible to reflect in an article. We configure it to our liking and once done we can click on Backup (the orange button) to make the copy and upload it to the chosen storage.

PKGBackup-2

We write the name of the copy and we will receive a few seconds later the confirmation that everything is correct. Restoring the copy is very simple, instead of choosing the "Backup" button on the home screen we choose "Restore" and we simply wait for everything to download to our device.

An application that converts restoring a device into something convenient and simple Thanks to the fact that she can download the applications, tweaks, add repos, configure applications, etc. Highly recommended.

Once restored, does Pkgbackup install repos and tweaks on its own and immediately? I mean, once the restore job is done, I have the device with all the tweaks already installed simply in the absence of configuring them? Thanks!

No, you must Jailbreak, install PKGBackup, and then restore the backup you made.

Luis, the thing about the jailbreak step and the previous installation of Pkgbackup again, I skipped it for obvious. I mean yes, once the backup is restored, all the tweaks are already available to configure. Thanks!

    Yes, it should be.

Sorry to answer you with that so obvious but I don't know what level of knowledge you have XD 😉

Don't worry, I haven't bothered. Obviously you don't know me and you don't know how far I go. But I have a problem. Once I install Pkgbackup and configure the options in the iOS settings, I access the app and when I try to make the backup or enter the app's own settings, it freezes for a moment and returns me to the Springboard. I have tested it on my 5s, 7.1.1, and on my iPad Air, 8.1. In both I get the same result and that I have tried from multiple repos and always with version 8.0.4. I don't know what to do anymore ... 🙁
