How to use AirPods and other Bluetooth headsets with Apple TV

One of the main advantages that Apple TV offers us compared to other multimedia players or televisions, is its Ability to connect via Bluetooth to headphones and speakers.

Something especially useful if we do not want to disturb the neighbor, we need to use headphones to listen to television well or, directly, if we want to use our favorite headphones to watch our movies and series.

To connect Bluetooth headphones or speakers to Apple TV, the process is like with any other device we connect it to:

  • Put the headphones or speakers in pairing mode. The AirPods and some of the Beats Bluetooth headphones are synchronized through iCloud, so if we already have them paired with our iPhone from previous occasions, we simply have to take them out of the box or turn them on.
  • On Apple TV go to Settings -> Controllers and devices -> Bluetooth.
  • Will appear to you a list of devices you have previously connected or synchronized through iCloud, as well as the new headphones or speakers that we have in pairing mode under "Other devices".
  • By clicking on any of them, We will see the option to "Connect".

Some Bluetooth headsets may be paired to multiple devices, so, the next time we are going to connect them, the process is the same, but we should not put it in pairing mode. Those who do not have memory for more than one device, as soon as we pair it with a new one, it will ask us again to pair it with the Apple TV.

Once connected, we can control the volume with the controls of the headphones (if you have them), as well as with the Siri Remote or the Remote app of our iPhone.

With the arrival of the HomePod and other AirPlay speakers, such as the new Sonos, it is possible to connect them to Apple TV as well. In this case, we must go to Apple TV Settings and "Airplay". We must make sure we have it activated in that menu.

Once AirPlay is activated, we return to Settings and go to "Video and audio". From the "Audio output" section we can select the different AirPlay speakers that we have in our network.

Finally, remember that while you are playing a video on the Apple TV, you can pull down a menu from the top of the screen by sliding your finger down on the Siri Remote or in the Remote app. From that menu, under "Audio", we can select the audio output we want, although only the cable options, AirPlay or compatible Airpods and Beats headphones will be available.
