Quickly the first version of the iPad was replaced by the iPad 2, just a few months later. It was a success, and a benchmark in the universe of tablets that emerged then. Now, 10 years later, Apple has discontinued it all over the planet.
Apple has just discontinued the second-generation iPad worldwide. It was announced by Steve Jobs in March 2011, months after the first version of the iPad was presented. It marked a breakthrough in the line of these devices in all manufacturers, and established the foundations of what a tablet was.
The iPad 2 was already obsolete in most of the world since May 2019, except in the USA and Türkiye, where its local laws had to keep it active for at least ten years.
Now that it has been ten years since its commercial launch, it is already out of print in these two countries that were missing. So, there is obsolete worldwide.
The second-generation iPad featured an updated design that was a 33% thinner than the original iPad. It also had new capabilities, including a front facing camera for FaceTime calls, a gyroscope, and an updated dual-core A5 processor, twice as fast as the original iPad and up to nine times faster on graphics. The iPad 2 was also sold in black and white colors.
Once Apple declares a specific device model as discontinued, it does not receive any type of technical assistance by the company, nor does it supply replacement parts to be repaired, either by Apple directly or by third-party companies.
Obviously, these third-party repair companies will still be able to make repairs to the damaged units, but already with spare parts that are not original brand.
