iPadOS 18 has many (if not all) of the same features that iOS 18 brings to iPhones, such as the ability to customize the home screen or the update of apps like Notes or Calendar (now integrated with reminders). However, iPadOS 18 has exclusive functionality for iPads which promises to make Apple Music a better experience on the tablet thanks to a customizable tab bar.
Apple has included in its new design the possibility of including a tab bar in iPadOS 18 appsAnd while this may not be the biggest news in the world (how many years have we known about tabs within an app? Who knows), it is a more powerful change than you might expect. As we mentioned, Apple Music is a great example of what this change can mean for the user experience.
The best examples of the new iPadOS 18 tab bar are the apps that They allow you to customize it to your likingFor example (and although we can't enjoy this one) with the Apple News app you can add your most read posts to the tab bar for quick access. Similarly, you can add sections like Saved Stories and Puzzles if they are the most important to you. If you add these sections to the tab bar, you will be able to access them more easily.
With Apple Music, there is a similar implementation with customization possibilities. By default, you will see standard options like Home, New, and Search in the Music app tab bar, but You will have the possibility to add more according to your tastes. For that, Just long press on the floating tab bar in iPadOS 18 and you'll see supported sections highlighted in the sidebar. You can then drag those sections out of the sidebar and drop them into the tab bar. Voila. You can also add playlists and even playlist folders (which can only be created in Apple Music for Mac, by the way) to the tabs themselves.
It looks very much like The Tab Bar is here to stay in iPadOS design and many more apps will implement it in the near future. We'll see which ones are able to take full advantage of it. So far it's quite promising.
