iFixit breaks apart the iPhone 13 Pro with surprises

Like every year, iFixit brings us its particular "breakdown" of the device to bring us a complete detail of what the iPhone 13 Pro is like inside and the components that this year are inside. This year, they have been able to find surprises in the components of the Face ID and highlight the news that would impact the change of the screen of the device.

Before investigating what's inside the new iPhone, iFixit performed an X-ray scan where we can observe the L-shaped battery, the MagSafe's magnet ring, and also Image Stabilizing magnets next to the device circuitry. One of the highlights is that the iPhone 13 Pro seems to have a cable coming from one of the sensors on the top that, according to iFixit, can create problems when doing a device repair.

If we continue with a visual mapping, the Taptic Engine located inside and in charge of controlling the Haptic Touch, seems to be smaller in size than other years. However, it is bulkier than in previous years and has increased its weight from 4,8 grams that it weighed in the iPhone 12 Pro to 6,3 that it weighs today. Continuing in the comparison with the iPhone 12 Pro, the new Pro model eliminates the earpiece of the speaker mounted on the screen by relocating it between the front camera the Face ID module, a measure that would facilitate the replacement of the screen. iFixit suspects that Apple is using integrated touch OLED panels that combine the touch and OLED layers of the screen, reducing the cost, thickness and number of cables to manage within the device.

The fault of the new design of the device is the water inlet identifier and the spot projector of the iPhone 13, which have been merged into a single module and has allowed Apple to reduce the size of the notch on iPhones this year. With this, they have also made the Face ID hardware independent of the screen.

According to iFixit, despite the unpairing of the Face ID module and the screen, any screen replacement disables Face ID. This means that screen replacements not authorized by Apple will leave our devices without the ability to unlock by Face ID. (unlock or authenticate for any action involving facial recognition).

Regarding battery capacity, the iPhone 13 Pro uses 11,97Wh, which is equivalent to 3.095mAh, compared to 2.815mAh for the iPhone 12 Pro. The battery in the iPhone 13 Pro has an L-shaped design this year, a change from the rectangular battery used in last year's Pro model. iFixit says the battery swap tests have been successful, despite rumors that battery replacements would not be possible.

Inside there is 6 GB of RAM, Along with several Apple-designed ultra-wideband and power management chips, and unsurprisingly, the iPhone 13 Pro is equipped with Qualcomm's SDX60M modem and what iFixit believes to be a 5G transceiver. The famous analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, said that Qualcomm's modem chip in this year's iPhones has satellite communication functionality, but if it is there, iFixit has not noticed and Apple did not launch a communication about it in the Keynote, so it seems that this functionality has come to nothing. Bloomberg has clarified that Apple is working on a satellite feature that will allow people to send texts in emergency situations using a satellite connection, but this functionality is not expected until 2022.
