How to install Kodi on iPhone and Apple TV 4

Kodi

For both iOS and tvOS, there are many quality media players, but I would venture to say that none are as powerful as Kodi, the player formerly known as XBMC (XBox Media Center). Admittedly, it is not the most intuitive program in the world, someone who tried XBMC many times told you and uninstalled it before taking advantage of it, but it is worth it, and a lot, if we learn to use it.

Is there a version of Kodi for iOS or tvOS? Well the answer is yes, it is available for both operating systems. Even if we use iOS 9 or later and Xcode 7 or later, we can use it without jailbreak. In this article we will explain how to install Kodi on both your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad and your fourth generation Apple TV, also explaining how to install it if we use jailbreak on iOS (easier and more durable).

How to install Kodi on iOS and tvOS

Install Kodi on jailbroken iOS

Without a doubt, this is the best option and, in fact, many users would do the jailbreak to your device just for using Kodi. Although, as we will explain later, installing Kodi on iOS 9 or later without jailbreak is not a very complicated process, Xcode certificates expire, first after 3 months and then every week, which is a problem, especially if we want to use it. on an Apple TV that we don't have near a Mac. All these problems don't exist if we use jailbreak and here we explain how to install it on an iOS device that has "escaped from jail":

  1. Logically, if we explain how to install Kodi on a jailbroken device, the first step will be to do it if we have not done it yet. At the time of writing this guide, the latest jailbreak available is iOS 9.1. If you are on that version and want to jailbreak your device, you just have to follow our Tutorial to jailbreak iOS 9.0-9.0.2, but downloading the latest version of the tool from in.pangu.io.
  2. Next we have to open Cydia, go to the tab Drive and then touch on Fonts.
  3. Inside Fuentes, we touch on Edit and then Add.
  4. In the window that appears, we enter the Kodi repository, which is the following: http://mirrors.kodi.tv/apt/ios/
  5. Once the packages are updated, we search for Kodi and install it like any other Cydia tweak or application. It couldn't be easier.

How to install Kodi without jailbreak, also on tvOS

As I mentioned above, installing Kodi without jailbreak is not complicated, but the problem is that certificates expire (and cannot be upgraded with the free account). To install this and other .deb packages without jailbreak, we will need:

  • iOS AppSigner (discharge).
  • Apple developer account, the free one (tutorial).
  • Xcode 7 or later.
  • For iOS, a device with iOS 9 or later.
  • USB-C cable for Apple TV 4.

The process to follow is the same in both cases. The only difference is, logically, that to install it on the iPhone we will need the .deb for iOS and the one for tvOS for the Apple TV 4. We will have to do the following:

  1. Let's go to the Kodi trials page (here) and download the .deb package from the device where we are going to use it. The best thing would be to download the last one, but sometimes the application closes, so it is advisable to use the last one that works.
  2. We open Xcode.
  3. Let File / New / Project.
  4. We choose Single View Application and click on Next.

Install-kodi-1

  1. In the next window, we give the project a name and click on Next.

Install-kodi-2

  1. We indicate where to save it (it is provisional, it can be deleted after the whole process) and click on Next.
  2. We select our device, then our team, which will be our Apple ID, and click on Fix issue. Install-kodi-3
  3. Now we open iOS App Signer and click Browse. Here we have to look for the .deb package that we downloaded in step 1.
  4. We display the menu Provisioning Profile and we select the one we have created with Xcode, it will be something like the following screenshot.

iOS app signer 2

  1. Finally we click on Home and in Save to save the file in IPA format.
  2. We wait.
  3. When the process is finished (it will put «Done» in the lower left part), we return to Xcode and go to the menu Window / Devices.
  4. Now we just have to click on the plus symbol (+) and choose the IPA that we have created with the iOS App Signer.  install-kodi-5
  5. We wait and, if there have been no errors, we will see the application installed on our home screen.

Now that you have Kodi installed, I would have to install repositories and add-ons, for which you can see the video that Luis made a long time ago. We leave you with him.
