IOS 10 features not available on iPhone 5 / 5c and earlier

iOS 10 and iPhone 5c

As with every release of any operating system, iOS 10 has come up with some features that are only available for newer devices. If we add those of past versions to these new limitations, we can have an iPhone that no longer has many interesting functions. The iPhone 5 was released in 2012 and the iPhone 5c was released a year later, albeit with virtually the same hardware. Both will not be able to do much of what iOS 10 offers.

Both the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c have the 32-bit A6 processor and 1GB of RAM, which in the end is what really matters. In this article we will talk about several restrictions that Apple has imposed on devices that have hardware that was launched four years ago.

IOS 10 things the iPhone 5 can't do

Night Shift

Night Shift

We start with the functions that may be available, but that Apple does not want us to use to avoid - although I do not know if they do - that older devices offer a bad experience. Night Shift is the system that changes the colors of the screen by eliminating blue tones so that our body "knows" that it has been done at night. This feature is nothing more than Apple's version of f.lux, a software available for years in Cydia that worked perfectly on 32-bit devices.

Safari content blockers

It is clear that for block content you need a device a little faster, but I think there would not have been big problems if this function were available on 32-bit devices like the iPhone 5. In fact, there was also some ad blocker in Cydia and it was available long before the arrival of the iPhone 5s, the first smartphone with a 64-bit processor.

Selfies with flash

retina Flash

Using the screen to light up selfies is a great idea… from Snapchat. The famous messaging application had long used what Apple called retina Flash and it did not penalize any iPhone regardless of the size of its screen or its processor. Another restriction imposed by Tim Cook and his team.

Slow motion video

This restriction is more understandable. IPhone 5 and iPhone 5c can't do slow motion videos because they don't have hardware for it. We could try, but the result would be no different than slowing down the video speed with any other software.

Camera burst mode

Of this restriction we could say the same as in the previous one, although it would not have been a bad thing to be able to do them even if the 10 photos per second that the most current devices can do were not reached.

live Photos

With the arrival of the iPhone 6s, Apple introduced Live Photos, an option that records 3 seconds (1.5 before and 1.5 after) of the scenes to show us a kind of GIF. They are also not available on devices prior to the iPhone introduced a year ago.

touch ID

The iPhone 5c was the last to use the original home button. Starting with the iPhone 5s, Apple introduced Touch ID, that new home button that had in itself a fingerprint reader with which we can unlock some applications, buy in the App Store or unlock the iPhone.

Touch 3D

3d-touch-01

The 3D Touch screen was, with the permission of the new camera, the main novelty of the iPhone 6s. It is a flexible screen that allows differentiate applied pressure and it offers new functions. Logically, it cannot be used on devices prior to 2015.

Apple Pay

To pay with Apple Pay we have to identify ourselves with the Touch ID. As we have mentioned before, the iPhone 5 / 5c lack the fingerprint reader, so they cannot be used to pay with Apple Pay either.

Step counter

To be honest, I have never personally found this option any useful, since I am more interested in the data provided by applications like Runtastic. In any case, I know that this information is of interest to other users, but it is not available on the iPhone 5 / 5c.

Metal

Apple introduced a new graphic accelerator called Metal in the keynote in which they also presented iOS 8. Like many other functions, in order to take advantage of this technology, 64-bit devices are needed, so the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c are left out.

Hey siri

Hey siri

The iPhone 5 / 5c can use this function, but I have included it in this list because they cannot use it if we do not have the device connected to an outlet. To be able to use it in this way you need to have the M9 co-processor or later.

rise to wake

We know that this function has not been liked by many users, but it is also available in iOS 10. Like the function of the previous point, to be able to use Rise to Wake you need the M9 co-processor, so can only be used by iPhone 6s and iPhone 7.

Are there any iOS 10 features that you miss on your iPhone 5 or earlier?

The same thing happens to me, I have an iPhone 6s, it is a bug when the system is in Spanish, if you change to English the applications work.

It was also missing to include that the new Siri voices are not available because my iPhone 5 does not have it, it cannot download them.

You make a mistake comparing a simple effect of "blank screen and turn the brightness up to maximum) with" Retina Flash. " Retina Flash is (probably) impossible to implement on iPhone 6 or lower, but I don't have enough information on how it works to venture to say so.

The fact that Apple Pay cannot be used I think has more to do with the fact that the iPhone 5 / 5C do not have an NFC chip ... so paying is difficult no matter how much TouchID they have ...

notifications and emojis stick to me, the battery drains very quickly, I have to use battery saver, the music app is less intuitive, the design went from being minimalist to grotesque, gigantic buttons and texts, what I appreciate is being able to delete native apps, however they are not completely uninstalled, waiting for the jailbreak for ios 10 because I love my iphone 5c has everything I need for now.
