On June 13, Apple presented iOS 10, the next version of its mobile operating system that shortly after was already available in beta for developers to test. In the keynote they told us about 10 important news but, logically, there was much more that they could not comment on because otherwise the event would have lasted several more hours. Now, almost three months later, we already know practically all the details of iOS 10 and in this post we explain them to you.

Rich notifications

With iOS 8 came interactive notifications. Those types of notifications allowed us to perform some actions from the notifications in the form of strips and in the Notification Center, how to respond with a text message or give a retweet on Twitter or Like it on Facebook. With iOS 10 comes the rich notifications, which is one more turn of the screw.

From what I've tested so far, Rich Notifications are more of a face lift than anything else. Now, when we slide a strip to interact with the notification, the strip will allow us to do much more, since practically all the application options will appear. For example, we may send a message from Digital touch in Messages.

It seems important to mention that these enriched notifications will be also available for devices without 3D Touch.

Siri integration with third-party applications

This is a breakthrough that will allow us do (almost) everything by asking Siri. Until iOS 9 we could only ask you to do things related to Apple applications and others like Twitter and Facebook. From now on, when developers update their applications, we can send a WhatsApp or start a physical activity with Runtastic by asking Siri. In this way, I think we will all use the iOS virtual assistant more than we used it until now.

Smarter predictive text

I can't know how many users take advantage of predictive text, but I do know that it comes in handy, for example, when we can only type with one finger without grasping the terminal well. In iOS 10, predictive text will also be another twist, you will know better what we can mean and, in addition, we propose emojis that we can use in conversation. In the case of Messages, it will even allow us to change several at the same time.

New Photos app

The new Photos application will be another of the interesting novelties of iOS 10. But by this I mean more about the possibilities of the reel than anything else. Photos may recognize objects and various types of faces to sort them according to their type. On the other hand, it also has the new option "Memories", which invites us to look in that section from time to time because it may have created a new video of slides that we had not seen.

The new iOS 10 Maps

The first thing we will notice when entering Maps in iOS 10 is that your design has changed a lot of. But this will not be the only novelty. The new artificial intelligence in iOS 10 will make Maps proactive, like Siri, and know where we may want to go next. Of course, logically if we usually lead a routine life.

Apple Music is one of Apple's latest bets and the Music application has received a facelift in iOS 10. More HomeKit categories

In iOS 10 there will be more HomeKit categories available and to control them we will have available (installed by default ...) an application called "Home" that I personally have not tried because it does not have anything compatible. We can also control our home from a Control Center which now includes charts like multitasking.

New and important news in the Phone app

The phone application will improve a lot with the arrival of iOS 10. One of the new functions is that it can block SPAM calls, those that can bother us at the least expected moment. But what is perhaps more interesting is that we can contact a friend, family member, etc., from the phone book and choose at that moment how we communicate with him. For example, in addition to calls, SMS and FaceTime (if available), we can make a VoIP call with a compatible service, such as WhatsApp.

Messages takes another leap in quality

The best of the 10 new features they introduced on June 13 was hands down the new Messages (iMessage). Unencrypted kernel?

At this time we still cannot confirm 100% that the kernel of the final version of iOS 10 will be unencrypted. The point is that in the betas it has not been encrypted and, although it is true that they could encrypt it in the final version, everything seems to indicate that it will not be the case. The reasons why Apple has left the kernel unencrypted are several:

Discover faults sooner. If the kernel is unencrypted, the "good guys" can find and report bugs sooner. If it's unencrypted and the "bad guys" find a bug, they can sell it and users will be exposed for longer, as long as the "good guys" take to find them.
Better performance. With the kernel unencrypted, iOS 10 will have better performance than previous versions of iOS, something that has already been verified in the different betas that we have tested and for which many have remembered the performance of iOS 6 (although I think I exaggerate 😉 )
Security is not compromised. It seems difficult to assimilate, but this is what all security experts say. From what we who are not specialists can understand and as I have said on several occasions, Ubuntu is a very secure operating system, I think that more than macOS or iOS, it does not have the encrypted kernel and it does not have major problems. In fact, when a bug is discovered, it is corrected in hours, literally.

Ability to remove default applications (bloatware)

Technically, what we can do is remove them from the home screen. Many users, including myself, have several applications on our iPhone or iPad that we will never use. For example, the Contacts application: why do we want it if we have them in the Phone application? The same can be applied for FaceTime, an application that we can remove perfectly and continue calling or receiving calls.

The FaceTime example is perfect to understand what we can do: the applications will be integrated into the system so as not to generate problems, but we will not see them again.

Game Center disappears from Springboard

Along with iOS 10, Apple will release a new SDK for games. Game Center will disappear from the home screen, but users who use it have nothing to fear: Game Center will be accessible from any compatible game.

Over 100 new emoji

As in every new major update, along with iOS 10 will also come a lot of new emoji. Many of them will be versions that spread the equality between the sexes, but others will also arrive, such as the Paella or a water pistol that will surely generate a lot of controversy for replacing the real one.

New Control Center

New in Maps: option to remember where we have left our car

Until now, I used a small Workflow application that, when using it, recorded where I had left the car to find it later. This option will be automatic in iOS 10. It is not very clear how it works, but it seems that it detects that we are moving at a normal speed of a vehicle and that we are stopping in a different area than where we live. If we have moved in this way, we have an option that will tell us where have we left the car, as long as we have it configured from the settings.

Swift Playgrounds

Children are the future, and they are for everything. There are very young young people who have already developed applications for iOS, Apple knows this and wants to teach children from a very young age. The solution to this is called Swift Playgrounds.

Swift Playgrounds is an application that will propose to the little ones to carry out some tasks that may be fun for them and that, at the same time, can make them learn to program. I've tried one myself where we make a kind of talking keyboard and I think kids can have fun and learn at the same time.

New in Safari

Ability to close all tabs

I think i remember which was an option available in iOS 7, although not officially, which disappeared in iOS 8. In iOS 7 we could close all the tabs if we opened a private browsing session, but this is something that stopped working in later versions. iOS 10 includes it finally and officially.

Two windows at the same time

Since iOS 9, we can use the split screen. The problem was if we wanted to use two windows of the same application. Well, this problem is solved in iOS 10: we can do Split View and use two Safari windows. Why not do this with other applications even if they are Apple's own?

Sometimes, especially when we want to update several applications at the same time, we download many applications from the App Store at the same time. And this is perhaps the most important point of all. Apple today announced that the iOS 10 official release will be on September 13.

If you have been using one of the iOS 10 betas, you will have to delete the profile from the settings to install iOS 10.0, although it is likely that you cannot because it is the same version that was available in beta. My recommendation is the following:

We make a backup of important data. Personally, I don't like to recover other data and I prefer to do a clean installation. Important data (contacts, notes, etc.) can be saved in iCloud.
We open iTunes.
We turn off the iPhone.
We connect the USB of the Lightning cable to our Mac or PC.
With the home key pressed, we connect the Lightning to the iPhone.
When iTunes tells us that a device is connected in recovery mode, we agree to restore the device.
Finally, we recover the important data.
