iOS 10: everything you need to know about the next version of iOS

iOS 10

On June 13, Apple presented iOS 10, the next version of its mobile operating system that shortly after was already available in beta for developers to test. In the keynote they told us about 10 important news but, logically, there was much more that they could not comment on because otherwise the event would have lasted several more hours. Now, almost three months later, we already know practically all the details of iOS 10 and in this post we explain them to you.

While they were explaining the 10 news that we mentioned above, in Actualidad iPhone We got to work to report live on everything they commented and published almost in real time our article "Apple Introduces iOS 10 With 10 Interesting New Features". Perhaps, these 1st news are the best known, but we will also include them in this very complete post on iOS 10. Below you have everything that is known about iOS 10.

The 10 novelties of iOS 10 that they presented on June 13

Rich notifications

rich-notifications-ios-10

With iOS 8 came interactive notifications. Those types of notifications allowed us to perform some actions from the notifications in the form of strips and in the Notification Center, how to respond with a text message or give a retweet on Twitter or Like it on Facebook. With iOS 10 comes the rich notifications, which is one more turn of the screw.

From what I've tested so far, Rich Notifications are more of a face lift than anything else. Now, when we slide a strip to interact with the notification, the strip will allow us to do much more, since practically all the application options will appear. For example, we may send a message from Digital touch in Messages.

It seems important to mention that these enriched notifications will be also available for devices without 3D Touch.

Siri integration with third-party applications

This is a breakthrough that will allow us do (almost) everything by asking Siri. Until iOS 9 we could only ask you to do things related to Apple applications and others like Twitter and Facebook. From now on, when developers update their applications, we can send a WhatsApp or start a physical activity with Runtastic by asking Siri. In this way, I think we will all use the iOS virtual assistant more than we used it until now.

Smarter predictive text

Emojis in the iOS 10 Messages app

I can't know how many users take advantage of predictive text, but I do know that it comes in handy, for example, when we can only type with one finger without grasping the terminal well. In iOS 10, predictive text will also be another twist, you will know better what we can mean and, in addition, we propose emojis that we can use in conversation. In the case of Messages, it will even allow us to change several at the same time.

New Photos app

The new Photos application will be another of the interesting novelties of iOS 10. But by this I mean more about the possibilities of the reel than anything else. Photos may recognize objects and various types of faces to sort them according to their type. On the other hand, it also has the new option "Memories", which invites us to look in that section from time to time because it may have created a new video of slides that we had not seen.

The new iOS 10 Maps

IOS 10 Maps

The first thing we will notice when entering Maps in iOS 10 is that your design has changed a lot of. But this will not be the only novelty. The new artificial intelligence in iOS 10 will make Maps proactive, like Siri, and know where we may want to go next. Of course, logically if we usually lead a routine life.

On the other hand, it will also include new information, such as parking details that you will get from Parkopedia.

Face wash for the Music app

Custom Apple Music Playlists

Apple Music is one of Apple's latest bets and the Music application has received a facelift in iOS 10. There are many who do not like and prefer the iOS 9 version, but the good thing about the iOS 10 version is that it They have eliminated options that hardly anyone cared about (Connect is no longer a tab) and is now more focused on ourselves.

Apple is preparing a team of publishers to include lyrics in Music app, but currently we can only see the lyrics that we have included in the iTunes options. In any case, Mark Gurman has already talked about the novelties of the lyrics and in the future it will be all automatic.

News will also improve

Although it is one of the applications that is less interesting, but more for not being available than for something else, the application News It will also improve with the arrival of iOS 10. The design will change and give a much more careful image, as if it were a version 2.0. Moreover, we will offer more news that may interest us, something like what Apple Music does when we start a station about some style, artist or song.

More HomeKit categories

In iOS 10 there will be more HomeKit categories available and to control them we will have available (installed by default ...) an application called "Home" that I personally have not tried because it does not have anything compatible. We can also control our home from a Control Center which now includes charts like multitasking.

New and important news in the Phone app

The phone application will improve a lot with the arrival of iOS 10. One of the new functions is that it can block SPAM calls, those that can bother us at the least expected moment. But what is perhaps more interesting is that we can contact a friend, family member, etc., from the phone book and choose at that moment how we communicate with him. For example, in addition to calls, SMS and FaceTime (if available), we can make a VoIP call with a compatible service, such as WhatsApp.

Messages takes another leap in quality

Broken Heart iMessage

The best of the 10 new features they introduced on June 13 was hands down the new Messages (iMessage). There are so many new features that it might be better for you to visit our special article that we wrote at the time about Apple's new messaging application. You have it available in the links at the end of the post.

Unencrypted kernel?

At this time we still cannot confirm 100% that the kernel of the final version of iOS 10 will be unencrypted. The point is that in the betas it has not been encrypted and, although it is true that they could encrypt it in the final version, everything seems to indicate that it will not be the case. The reasons why Apple has left the kernel unencrypted are several:

  • Discover faults sooner. If the kernel is unencrypted, the "good guys" can find and report bugs sooner. If it's unencrypted and the "bad guys" find a bug, they can sell it and users will be exposed for longer, as long as the "good guys" take to find them.
  • Better performance. With the kernel unencrypted, iOS 10 will have better performance than previous versions of iOS, something that has already been verified in the different betas that we have tested and for which many have remembered the performance of iOS 6 (although I think I exaggerate 😉 )
  • Security is not compromised. It seems difficult to assimilate, but this is what all security experts say. From what we who are not specialists can understand and as I have said on several occasions, Ubuntu is a very secure operating system, I think that more than macOS or iOS, it does not have the encrypted kernel and it does not have major problems. In fact, when a bug is discovered, it is corrected in hours, literally.

Ability to remove default applications (bloatware)

Remove native apps from iOS 10

Technically, what we can do is remove them from the home screen. Many users, including myself, have several applications on our iPhone or iPad that we will never use. For example, the Contacts application: why do we want it if we have them in the Phone application? The same can be applied for FaceTime, an application that we can remove perfectly and continue calling or receiving calls.

The FaceTime example is perfect to understand what we can do: the applications will be integrated into the system so as not to generate problems, but we will not see them again.

Game Center disappears from Springboard

Along with iOS 10, Apple will release a new SDK for games. Game Center will disappear from the home screen, but users who use it have nothing to fear: Game Center will be accessible from any compatible game.

Over 100 new emoji

New iOS 10 emoji

As in every new major update, along with iOS 10 will also come a lot of new emoji. Many of them will be versions that spread the equality between the sexes, but others will also arrive, such as the Paella or a water pistol that will surely generate a lot of controversy for replacing the real one.

New Control Center

decorus-control-center-ios-10-en-ios-9

El new Control Center arrives with pages or letters: on the left we have the options of Home or HomeKit, in the center we have something similar to what we saw in iOS 9, but without some playback options that would be in the third letter. We can leave the Control Center in two cards if we eliminate the home automation from the iPhone settings.

New in Maps: option to remember where we have left our car

Until now, I used a small Workflow application that, when using it, recorded where I had left the car to find it later. This option will be automatic in iOS 10. It is not very clear how it works, but it seems that it detects that we are moving at a normal speed of a vehicle and that we are stopping in a different area than where we live. If we have moved in this way, we have an option that will tell us where have we left the car, as long as we have it configured from the settings.

Swift Playgrounds

Swift Playgrounds

Children are the future, and they are for everything. There are very young young people who have already developed applications for iOS, Apple knows this and wants to teach children from a very young age. The solution to this is called Swift Playgrounds.

Swift Playgrounds is an application that will propose to the little ones to carry out some tasks that may be fun for them and that, at the same time, can make them learn to program. I've tried one myself where we make a kind of talking keyboard and I think kids can have fun and learn at the same time.

New in Safari

Ability to close all tabs

Close all Safari tabs in iOS 10

I think i remember which was an option available in iOS 7, although not officially, which disappeared in iOS 8. In iOS 7 we could close all the tabs if we opened a private browsing session, but this is something that stopped working in later versions. iOS 10 includes it finally and officially.

For close all open tabs in Safari From iOS 10 we just have to hold down the option to see all the tabs and then choose the option "Close X tabs", where the "X" will indicate the number of open windows.

Two windows at the same time

open-window-split-view-safari-ios-10-2

Since iOS 9, we can use the split screen. The problem was if we wanted to use two windows of the same application. Well, this problem is solved in iOS 10: we can do Split View and use two Safari windows. Why not do this with other applications even if they are Apple's own?

Possibility of managing downloads from the App Store

Manage App Store downloads with 3D Touch

Sometimes, especially when we want to update several applications at the same time, we download many applications from the App Store at the same time. What if one of them is from WhatsApp and we want to test its news before anything else? Well, we can manage downloads with more options than before, all thanks to 3D Touch.

"Hey Siri" only works on one of our devices

If we have an iPhone, an iPad and an Apple Watch and we invoke Siri with the command "Hey Siri", in iOS 9 all three devices can respond to us. A smart feature has been included in iOS 10 that will make only one of them is activated. It is not really clear why one or the other is chosen, but hey, that doesn't matter, right?

Warning for when an app is not developed for 64-bit

Warning when installing a non-64-bit app on iOS 10 '

I honestly have doubts as to whether an app doesn't developed for 64-bit may affect performance general system, but that is the warning that we can read when we run a 32-bit application on 64-bit devices. I agree with what they think in different media: perhaps this notice is for developers to feel a bit ashamed and update their applications.

iOS 10 takes up less space

The space is to occupy it, but it is worth it that we can fill it with our own data. With iOS 9 came a function -App Thinning- that made the applications take up less space because we only used what was necessary for our device even though the app was universal. Now with iOS 10 we will have some more space, as has already been confirmed on social networks.

Rise to Wake activates the screen when lifting the iPhone

Thanks to the M9 onwards, an iPhone or iPad is capable of waiting without consuming more battery, which allows us to use the «Hey, Siri» function and this new one that will allow us wake up iPhone when picking it up. From what I have been able to prove, the screen turns on for a couple of seconds and then turns off again, so we have little time to take a look or to put our finger on the Touch ID and unlock the device if we have it. configured in the settings. This will come especially well for those of us who think that the Touch ID will last longer if we are not pressing it all day.

Health and organ donors

iOS 10 will include a feature that will allow anyone (initially Americans) register as organ donors. Like any management, everything is easier if we can do it from home or from anywhere without having to fill out so much paperwork.

Safety Notice When Lightning Cable Is Wet

IOS 10 Wet Lightning Connector Notice

There have been cases of deaths from using damaged or wet cables. If the cable is in bad condition, iOS 9 can already warn of a problem, but iOS 10 will also warn that it is wet and that we can have an accident. As has always been said, safety comes first.

New to the watch: "Sleep" alarm

IOS 10 Sleep Alarm

Apple already showed in spring that it wants to help us rest better. With iOS 9.3 came Night Shift, an F.lux «a la Cupertina» that removes blue tones from the screen to help us sleep better. With iOS 10 will also come the "Sleep" option that is available from the Clock application. The main idea is notify us when we have to get up and go to bed to do it every day the same and thus rest better. The option also includes sleep analysis.

Faster text erasure with 3D Touch

A long time ago, I don't remember what version of iOS it was, when we started to delete text, it did so at a speed that would increase if we did not release the key. In a later version of iOS, it started to do the same, but respecting whole words, which caused the erase speed to drop. In iOS 10 comes an option with which, if we press harder, it will erase faster, that is, the speed will depend on the applied force.

What's new in Mail

Mail has not received as many news as in other versions, but the application continues to be polished by adding functions such as:

  • Unsubscribe directly from Mail.
  • Better filters.
  • New conversations view.
  • Move emails to other folders more easily.

Differential Privacy

For artificial intelligence to be successful, some user data has to be collected. This is something that practically all companies do, especially Google and Facebook, and Apple will do in the new versions of their operating systems. But Apple will use what is known as Differential Privacy, a system that collects information while respecting the privacy of users and in which we can refuse to participate.

IOS 10 Developer Features

But not everything is options for users. iOS 10 will also arrive with these features for developers:

  1. Notification of messages read by conversations in Messages.
  2. Autocorrect improvements for Korean and Thai.
  3. Dictionary of definitions in Danish.
  4. Definition dictionary in traditional Chinese.
  5. Location suggestions in Calendar.

  11. Improved self-improvement (forgive the redundancy) in Photos.
  12. Rest & Type keyboard for iPad.

 IOS 10 release date

And this is perhaps the most important point of all. Apple today announced that the iOS 10 official release will be on September 13.

If you have been using one of the iOS 10 betas, you will have to delete the profile from the settings to install iOS 10.0, although it is likely that you cannot because it is the same version that was available in beta. My recommendation is the following:

  1. We make a backup of important data. Personally, I don't like to recover other data and I prefer to do a clean installation. Important data (contacts, notes, etc.) can be saved in iCloud.
  2. We open iTunes.
  3. We turn off the iPhone.
  4. We connect the USB of the Lightning cable to our Mac or PC.
  5. With the home key pressed, we connect the Lightning to the iPhone.
  6. When iTunes tells us that a device is connected in recovery mode, we agree to restore the device.
  7. Finally, we recover the important data.
