iOS 11.3 and tvOS 11.3 offer support for AirPlay 2 with multi-room function

During the afternoon yesterday, Spanish time, Apple was dedicated to launching new betas of almost all the operating systems in which it is working, except for watchOS. In this article, you can find all the news, in sight and detailed in the release notes, but they are not the only ones.

As usual, once the first beta of the next iOS update, or any other Apple operating system, has arrived at the developers, they have already begun to check the functions that are not declared in the notes. The one that attracts the most attention, for its importance, is the AirPlay 2 support.

Both tvOS 11.3 and iOS 11.3 offer support for AirPlay 2, an updated wireless communication protocol, which was officially released at WWDC 2017, but has not been fully available on any previous version of iOS as of this date. The first evidence of AirPlay 2, was found in iOS 11.2, but it was not fully functional. Thanks to these new functions, devices managed by iOS 11.3 or tvOS 11.3 will be able to reproduce the same content on all the HomePods in our home.

Being the first version of both iOS and tvOS compatible with AirPlay 2, it is normal that Apple has not wanted to include it in the notes of the final version, so as they are polishing it in future versions, Apple will add it in the notes of the following betas. Regarding the launch of the final version of both iOS 11.3 and tvOS 11.3, the same trend is followed of offering between 5 and 6 betas of each new version, it is likely that the final version will not be released until March.

It should be remembered that the multi-room function of the HomePod, will not be available at launch, so it seems that Apple has caught the bull, once again, launching a product ahead of time without being completely finished and in operation all the features that it offers us. If we do not intend to buy a HomePod, but want to take advantage of the possibilities that AirPlay 2 offers us, we can choose one of the Sonos models that will be updated to be compatible with this proprietary Apple protocol.
