Review: iPad 2

The new Apple tablet has already fallen into my hands and the first impressions are fantastic despite being "more of the same" and is that the iPad 1 continues to have a very high bar despite the improvements at the hardware level that are have been introduced on the iPad 2.

As this post tends to be an analysis and opinion on the iPad 2, we will treat the main aspects individually.

We started after the jump!

Esthetic:

The iPad two has arrived in two variants at the aesthetic level: one in white and the other in black. As I have always had a weakness for the color white within the apple world, my decision has been simple.

After testing it for a few hours, I have not noticed that the white frame bothers me at all for topics such as watching a movie or playing games, however, browsing the Internet everything looks "more beautiful" and is that as most of the pages have the white background, the visual feeling is very nice.

The black frame is something that all manufacturers of televisions or monitors use and it is not on a whim, however, in a device like the iPad I do not think that we have to comply with this rule in a strict way.

Weight and measurements:

The back of the iPad has been completely modified. What used to be flat is now curved and what was curved before is now flat. This redesign causes a change in the ergonomics of the iPad that although it is not bad at all, I miss the lines of the first iPad.

On the contrary, the feeling when holding the iPad 2 with one hand is much more satisfactory than before and it seems that the weight on the iPad 2 is much better distributed. It's funny, but the iPad 2 seems to weigh much less than the original iPad and they are barely a few grams apart.

Display:

There was a lot of talk about a possible Retina Display on the iPad 2 to finally end up having the same screen as the iPad 1. The same? NO!

The screen of the iPad 2 is still based on an IPS panel and maintains the resolution compared to its predecessor, however, the image quality has been improved in all aspects. Photos look really good on the new iPad 2.

Performance:

At this point I will try to talk about the performance of the iPad 2 based on that of the iPad 1 for those who are undecided in the purchase of the new Apple tablet.

The iPad 1 is a beast, it's going great but iOS 4 took a toll on its user experience. With the days you get used to it and everything seems to fly again, however, there are small "loading times" that are hardly noticeable but there they are. With the iPad 2 immediacy has returned.

It no longer matters how many tabs you have open in Safari or how many applications are in the background. The performance of the iPad 2 is always spectacular.

Increased performance in the tasks that I just described It is mainly due to the increase in the amount of RAM (now 512 MB) and its frequency of work.

The A5 processor, for now, is a guest that has not been given all the prominence it deserves. I doubt that there are applications in the App Store (except those of Apple) that make use of the dual core efficiently although when the applications are optimized, there we will begin to see what the iPad 2 is capable of.

Improving the unbeatable:

Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to test multi-touch gestures on the iPad 1. Yesterday, when I released my iPad 2 the first thing I did was enable these gestures and now the iPad is another story.

It's amazing how well the gestures work in all situations and what's even better, not having to use the HOME button only brings advantages. It is clear that it is a matter of time before Apple makes this button disappear that has been with us since 2007.

If you have not yet enabled multi-touch gestures on your iPad, I recommend that you follow this tutorial that we do in Actualidad iPad (eye, old versions of Xcode also work)

Cameras:

I honestly think that the introduction of cameras on this iPad 2 is merely anecdotal. They are not bad, they are very bad (always taking as a reference the time in which we move).

I do not understand how Apple wants us to use FaceTime with a VGA front camera whose resolution is 640 × 480.

The rear camera is the same, the quality taking photos is not very good and taking videos is not the panacea.

I am one of those who eagerly awaited a front camera on the iPad and I am disappointed in this regard, especially when we are talking about a device that is marketed in the era of high definition.

Battery:

It is still too early to give a verdict. At first I notice that it lasts somewhat less but I am with iOS 4.3 (which drains the battery) and I still have to perform a few charging cycles.

Still, people who have been enjoying the iPad 2 for weeks agree that the battery lasts the same (or longer) than the iPad 1.

To buy or not to buy the iPad 2?

I have had iPad 1, now I have 2 and I can say that I am very satisfied with the purchase. I like games, I travel a lot and I like to navigate with 5 or 6 tabs open, so for me the difference in performance compared to the iPad 1 has been spectacular.

If you are a user who only uses it to navigate calmly, check mail and some other simple task that does not involve the use of the processor in an exaggerated way (and the Angry Birds is not worth it), it is not worth the change.

And how are the light leaks going?

It seems incredible to me that no one does an analysis or comparison of the screen as Fran says, it is beginning to comment that the finish of the screen with a black background leaves much to be desired, yellow spots or light leaks, to see when a analysis of this.

Mine is perfect, no leaks. As for yellow spots, there are quite a few cases on the Internet, although everything seems to indicate that they are due to the glue they use during their assembly. We will have to wait a few weeks to see how the issue progresses or, on the contrary, there are massive returns of the iPad 2 for this problem.
Juan, I can't analyze a problem that I don't have. All the best

I know Nacho, I invite you to put a photo of your iPad2 when you turn it on or with a black background, or if you have a partner, some ipad1 a comparison, I returned mine and I did 4 hours of queue for this problem, in black funds was a lot that yellowed, that by the way the article was very good and congratulations, that one thing does not take away the other ee 😀

Nothing light leaks. And the yellow spots I had on the bottom of the screen the first day. The second day they disappeared. ^^

Borja, it was my fault that I put the link wrong. Already solved. All the best!

Goikomikel, can you hang a picture of your ipad while it turns on?

I have no light leaks on the screen, and I bought two in Miami, one with a black border and one with a white border (the latter is the prettiest by far). And in neither of them have I had problems with the screen or with the camera that is said.

Juan if that's what you see when you turn on the iPad, I would take it to an Apple store, Reseller or whatever, or call Apple and have it replaced. I was messing around in MediaMark with a black one and a white one and nothing like that was seen anywhere.

    Regards,
    Frank

I returned it because I think that the quality and price of an Apple product cannot be that, I do not know if you have noticed that in yours, but although with solores I do not know anything, when you put a dark background or something similar it shows a lot, It took me exactly 3 days to return it.

Well, I have already sold it, but not because of light failures ... I did it because I have the 1 and removing the cameras, which are not their strength either, does not give me anything new. That it is a few thousandths of a second faster or that it can have more tabs open, which I have, does not seem to me a reason for the expense. The processor as you say, waiting for the moment, the lamentable cameras and the speed in general ... insufficient to be the least bit surprised. I keep my iPad 1 that also has a jailbreak, and don't get confused, I pay for many games, what interests me about the jail are other things. Nor do I agree that you say that if it is for a navigation use and some game is not worth the change ... I do not think it is worth it for anyone who has 1.

I bought the 2, it had light leaks, I returned it, and now I have to wait about 4 weeks. Pufff ... in the rush I'm eating my head, it was the first iPad I was going to have, and now I'm considering buying the first one. I use my iPhone 4 a lot, I crack the battery before going to bed and I want the iPad for those moments or those trips. Of course, if I see a good offer on the 1st, I'll buy it, because having had 24 hours on the 2nd, the cameras and Facetime don't interest me, make it faster if it's a good thing, and its thinness, but otherwise, I think I'm going to save me 100 euros.
