Analysis of the iPhone 7 Plus Jet Black, the best iPhone to date [Videoreview]

To say that a newly launched iPhone is the best iPhone that has been launched to date sounds like something so obvious that it seems unnecessary to mention it, but it is that Apple has done very well with this new iPhone, especially with your iPhone 7 Plus, since it is the model in which more improvements are accumulated compared to the previous generation. For months we have been talking about an iPhone that was going to be identical to the previous model with some specific improvements, because Apple was going to throw the rest in the iPhone 8 next year. Everything seemed to indicate that this new iPhone was not going to be worth it, especially for those who already had an iPhone 6s or 6s Plus, and that it would be better to wait for next year.

Nothing could be further from reality, this new iPhone 7 Plus represents a leap in quality in each and every one of the characteristics of the world's best-known smartphone. And it is not easy to achieve that year after year for a company that is demanded more than the rest. Many have been left only with the detail that there is no headphone jack, which would be like evaluating a car exclusively for not having cupholders on the armrest. Camera, design, screen, battery, new home button, haptic engine ... and all this coupled with iOS 10 and everything that it allows to do with this new smartphone. Do you want to see what the iPhone 7 Plus Jet Black looks like? Well go ahead.

A design to take care of it, and enjoy it

Before the presentation it was already clear to me what my model was going to be: glossy black, piano black or Jet Black, as Apple prefers to call it. This thought was reaffirmed after seeing the presentation in which Apple showed us the delicate process with which they achieved such a spectacular finish on a device made of aluminum. Yes, it is true that even Apple itself warns us that the Jet Black finish can suffer small micro-abrasions with use, but it is something that it already had even without reading the fine print. My first iPhone was a black 3GS, with a glossy black plastic back casing, and this model reminds me too much of him to pass up.

After a black iPhone 6 Plus I went to white for my 6s Plus, and although it cannot be said that one is more beautiful than the other, the black front is spectacular with that uniformity that it shows with the screen off. This uniformity is also now not broken with the antenna lines that in previous models crossed the entire back of the phone. In addition to having reduced them, Apple in its black models has managed to make them barely noticeable. Not even the apple stands out in this model, as if Apple had not dared to break such a precious design. The iPhone 7 Plus Jet Black is a slim solid block of the same glossy black color no matter where you look at it., a real treat for the eyes.

"It will scratch just by looking at it" or "All your fingerprints will be marked" are some of the statements that I have read the most since I decided to buy. It doesn't really worry me, I am not one of those who buy an iPhone thinking of selling it and therefore suffering from every scratch that decreases its market value. I usually take good care of my belongings, cLike my Apple Watch Steel, which they told me the same about, and a year and a half later I still enjoy its beautiful design and glossy finish. Still, there is no need to be afraid, and although my phone is already protected with its respective cover (like all the previous ones), neither the footprints are marked by just touching it, nor are they scratched by looking at it.

The taptic engine, those little things that are worth a lot

When Apple launched its first iPhone it changed everything: physical keyboards would disappear from smartphones, which was a breakthrough that has allowed them to become what they are right now, but we lost that feeling that playing a physical keyboard gave. The Taptic Engine or taptic engine that Apple has included in this new iPhone 7 helps us to partially recover those sensations. Yes, it is true that there are already mobiles that vibrate when you touch the keyboard or the screen, but this is different, it is more subtle but at the same time more natural. It is very difficult to describe what you notice when you scroll through a list of options in a menu, or when you press the start button.

iphone-7-plus-06

Apple is so convinced that this taptic engine is going to be something important that it has even released an API for developers to make use of it. I have tried it with Alto's Adventure, one of the first games to make use of this API, and having the feeling that something is happening in your hands is strange at first, but it is missed as soon as you don't have it. It surprised me because I thought it was going to be something very similar to what we already had with the iPhone 6s, but I was wrong. You have to try it to know what I'm talking about. Something that arouses me quite curious is how this taptic engine could be used to improve accessibility for blind people, I hope that Apple uses it and does not take long to do so.

A button that is not, believe it or not

Closely related to the taptic engine, we are now talking about the start button, or rather, the “no button” start, because there is no longer a button. Apple has used the same technology that it already has mastered thanks to the Apple Watch first, followed by the trackpads and the iPhone 6s screen. Force Touch, 3D Touch, call it what you want, the fact is that the start button is really a piece of immobile glass that when pressed responds, and that it deceives us by making it seem that we press it thanks to the Taptic Engine.

Admittedly, the sensation is strange at first, but thanks to the fact that you can regulate the vibration it makes when pressing that strange effect is mitigated. Accustomed to mechanical pulsation, Most of us will use the highest vibration level (3) but I am sure that after a while and I will get used to level 2 it will be more than enough. We cannot forget that the fingerprint sensor is also under that button, and it works just as well as in the 6s.

iphone-7-plus-19

It is clear which is the path that Apple has decided to take, remove the home button, and is taking small but sure steps to reach its goal, we do not know if next year or later. It only needs to jump a small obstacle, to integrate the fingerprint sensor in the screen, but that is already possible with the new technologies that have appeared, so an iPhone without a home button is next.

The absence of the headphone jack, an inevitable decision

We are increasingly asking smartphones for more: screens with higher resolution and more brightness but that consume less, a more powerful and efficient processor ... but nevertheless we continue to use a connector with more than 100 years and whose last great revolution (reducing its size) occurred more than 50 years agowhen they weren't even dreaming of cell phones. It was about time that an archaic connector disappeared from next-generation devices and was replaced by a digital connector or wireless technology. The bet is made, and it is a winning bet.

iphone-7-plus-15

Much has been made of the inability to charge the iPhone while listening to music with Lightning headphones (I don't remember ever charging my iPhone while listening with headphones). And here you have to give Apple a slap on the wrist, because if your bet is on wireless, you should have already eliminated the cable to charge your iPhone. Everything will come, but it would have been the perfect occasion.

iphone-7-plus-18

Regarding the quality of the audio, I am not the best suited to evaluate headphones because my ears are not precisely my most developed or better educated sense organs, but the truth is that the new lightning EarPods sound just as good as the classic EarPods, which taking into account that it is a digital connection compared to the analog of the classics, does not speak very in favor of them. Anyway, I leave the analysis of these headphones for ears better educated than mine.

Stereo speakers, an improvement but little else

Since we are talking about music and headphones, we cannot fail to mention one of the novelties of this iPhone, which finally has two speakers that allow stereo sound, although without going overboard. One of the speakers is where it always is, at the bottom, and the other is the earpiece that we use to listen to calls, which now makes in addition to being the second speaker. The stereo effect is not really impressive since both speakers are too close to achieve this, and also the orientation of each is different, which also influences.

Obviously, we cannot compare this stereo sound with that of any “dedicated” speaker, but since the iPad Pro has stereo sound it can be a good point of reference. Unfortunately the iPhone 7 Plus does not come close to the sound of the iPad Pro, let it be said, it has four speakers. Yes, it has been improved compared to the iPhone 6s Plus that I had before, the sound is more powerful and you can consider listening to a movie without the need for headphones if you are in bed or a podcast while you shower, for example, but little else.

Water resistance finally arrives

It has taken but finally Apple has decided to provide its smartphone with the necessary water resistance to be afraid of using our iPhone near the liquid element. Any accident that involves wetting our iPhone 7 or 7 Plus will not be accompanied by a threat of heart attack, because we will know that there will be no risk of damage As long as we do not exceed the IP67 specifications, that is, 1 meter deep for 30 minutes.

iphone-7-plus-21

Too late? For Apple, this water resistance has come at the precise moment, when the design of the phone has allowed it to achieve that certification. Dispense with the headphone jack and the new start button, as well as the new camera design have been key elements to achieve this.. Some tests even claim that it resists better than other smartphones with higher certification, but it does not matter: Apple will not cover any water damage with its guarantee. Actually no similar product with this certification does it and the explanation is that this "impermeability" has an expiration date, because the passage of time can cause it to be lost, and there is no way of knowing if the damage has been caused by being in water longer or deeper than indicated.

Be that as it may, this certification only serves for accidents, no one dreams of being able to use their iPhone in the pool underwater, simply because the screen does not work. Yes, a photo could be taken using the physical volume buttons, but I insist, it is not the objective of this certification.

The best screen of the moment

The folks at Displaymate have rated the iPhone 7 Plus screen as "the best LCD screen out there today." It is not surprising because that title has already been achieved by the 9,7-inch iPad Pro and Apple has thrown the rest so that the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus can enjoy the same screen. The new screen of the iPhone 7 Plus has 50% more brightness, which is noticeable when used on the street, in broad daylight, something that is much appreciated.

The DCI-P3 color space, the same one used by the film industry, makes colors more lifelike, natural and richer than on other displays, and while it still lags behind Samsung's SuperAMOLEDs in some respects, but Displaymate itself assures that Apple has greatly reduced the difference between the two technologies, and there are aspects in which the LCD screen of the iPhone 7 is better than the SuperAMOLED of Samsung, for example in the precision of the colors, visually perfect.

Yes, we all take it for granted that Apple will switch to AMOLED screens on its next iPhone, but for reasons other than image quality: greater energy efficiency, better viewing angles, possibility of creating curved screens, etc. The differences between the blacks of this LCD screen and a Samsung SuperAMOLED are already minimal, and it shows with the naked eye.

More power and more RAM

The new iPhone 7 Plus is a real beast, even compared to some current computers. The new A10 Fusion chip manufactured by TSMC (Samsung no longer appears anywhere) has four cores and can work being more efficient or increasing performance, depending on the needs of the system. To this gross power we must add the 3GB of RAM, exclusive to the Plus model, and that are noticed when it comes to tasks as essential as opening several tabs in Safari.

iphone-7-plus-07

The GeekBench scores that this iPhone 7 Plus achieves are truly spectacular, superior to any other smartphone in the competition, even the Google Pixel XL presented a couple of days ago. It surpasses the MacBook 2016 and many other current laptops, something unthinkable with a smartphone just a couple of years ago.

This greater power is not fought with greater efficiency, achieving according to Apple up to 1 hour more autonomy compared to the iPhone 6s Plus. In this sense, I will still have to wait to normalize the use of the iPhone 7 Plus, because it is too early to draw conclusions and also the use that I am currently giving it is more than intensive. At the moment my impressions are that there are hardly any differences between the two models in terms of autonomy, but I insist, it is too early to draw conclusions. and I will have to wait a couple of weeks for a more solid opinion.

The camera, the most obvious change

We leave the strong point of this iPhone 7 Plus for last: its camera. Apple wanted this to be the true protagonist of the new Apple smartphone, and although the iPhone 7 improves on the previous generation with a better sensor and optical stabilizer, it is the iPhone 7 Plus that makes the difference with its double camera and the two-fold optical zoom. A wide-angle camera with an aperture f / 1,8 (f / 2,2 had that of the iPhone 6s) and a telephoto lens with aperture f / 2,8 to allow optical zoom and the Bokeh effect, which will arrive with the next update to iOS 10.1.

iphone-7-plus-09

Let's put the technical data aside, and talk directly about the results showing some examples taken with different lighting conditions and without any kind of processing. The changes are evident, with better photographs especially in low light conditions and the possibility, for the first time, of being able to capture photos with zoom without losing quality, yes, with good light conditions.

Video is also improved on the iPhone 7 Plus, and the ability to record video with twox optical zoom also makes a difference from the iPhone 6s Plus, even from the iPhone 7. Up to 4K videos at 30fps can be achieved with this new camera, achieving spectacular results thanks to its sensor and optical and digital stabilization.. We cannot forget the 7 Mpx front camera or the new four-LED True Tone flash. But the iPhone 7 Plus camera deserves a separate review, and we will.

Is it worth the change?

That is the question, and unfortunately the answer will have to be given by each one. Many users will not see necessary the change with respect to the iPhone 6s Plus, or even from the iPhone 6 Plus. However, there will be others who just for the camera will want to make the leap to the new generation. There will also be those who want to get their hands on the new screen, the new start button or the new glossy black or matte black color. Perhaps none of the new features of this iPhone 7 Plus is by itself enough to justify the change for many, but it is undeniable that all of them added together could perfectly make many decide to make the leap to the new generation. The decision is yours.

It is honestly the best iPhone out there, and it does not scratch as easily as people say, I have gone to the Apple Store to scratch it with the keys and not a scratch, first slide then incar, nothing at all, there was a jetblack that they had embedded the key because the aluminum was split.

Honestly if I had money I would buy it, but I wait for the iPhone 8n

Oh poor subnornal that his mother has not taught him education, first I have done it carefully, I have my iPhone 6 immaculate, the only thing that people exaggerate is that it is easily scratched.

What's more, they are true test iPhones, if you saw all the iPhones that I have seen smashed and also kids who throw iPhones as if they were stones on the table, I am one of those who leave iPhones in their place

PS: go to a school to teach you education, what a shame that human beings are such an asshole ...

I'm waiting for them to call me for mine, but nothing for two months, every year the same without stock but this seems even worse, let's see if they start to manufacture them earlier or some solution is not a year is always, the normal if there is but the plus ………….

Very good article ... although right at the end of the video you say that it is the iPhone that has had the most changes since its previous generation ... and it is NOT like that ... It is the one that has had the least, since all those who have changed from one generation to another they have had a complete design change… And we all know that this year Apple has not done it to reserve all the heavy artillery for next year… 10th anniversary iPhone… iPhone 8… or maybe… The Apple Phone 🙂

Very good article, I did not like the iPhone 3 or 3GS very much, but I have had all the aluminum ones since the iPhone 2g and obviously the glass ones like the 4 and 4s, I have a doubt, I could not find the one on my iPhone 7 wallpaper that promotes this iPhone, could someone help me?

"Not even the footprints are marked just by touching it" who do you want to deceive with this statement? Of course, it is marked by just touching it, it is a barbarity what the footprints are marked, it changes even the color. You do not want to deceive people. By the way, why do you buy a jet black if you are going to put a cover on it?

    1.    Luis Padilla said

Have you seen the video? There you see how you touched the iPhone and it is not marked. I'm glad of your choice, I'll keep my Jet Black, even if I put a cover on it.

    Good Luis.

I'm thinking of going from Matte Black to Jet Black… after two months… could you tell me if you've suffered a lot of scratches? Please be realistic ... (scratches in the area of the camera that is uncovered with the case, that area, the lower edges that are uncovered, etc)

    Thank you!
