Liquidmetal allows a headphone cable to be stretched up to 8x its original length

Much has been said about Liquidmetal material which Apple has had a patent to use in its products for several years. In all this time, only the SIM tray extraction clip used in the iPhone 3GS has been made of Liquidmetal.

Since then, always it has been rumored that Apple would stop using the usual aluminum for LiquidmetalHowever, the day never comes. The improvements provided by this material are evident: it is stronger, softer and more resistant to corrosion compared to aluminum.

In the video that heads this post you can see what happens if we make a small portion of the headphone cable with Liguidmetal: its length can be stretched up to eight times. The usefulness of this material applied to cables is very clear: to prevent them from being damaged by involuntary pulls that end up sectioning the copper over time.

Liquid Metal

As Engadget explains, the secret of these elastic cables lies in filling an elastic polymer with liquid metal. In this way, the conduction of electricity can be achieved normally and a very high tolerance against cable pulls is obtained. This invention is applicable to any type of electrical cable.

If the current circulating inside the cable is very large, the section of the cable must be greater and, therefore, the amount of liquid metal to be injected is also greater, something that reduces the elastic power of the whole.

Since Apple has the patent to use liquid metal in its electronic products, sooner or later all of us will have at home something made with this material that promises so much at an industrial level.
