Tutorial (Mac): Fix "iTunes Library.itl cannot be read ..." error

If you have encouraged to update to iOS 5 -and consequently to iTunes 10.5 beta- and then you have wanted to downgrade, it is very likely that you have run into the iTunes error that does not allow you to load your iTunes library because it was created with a totally new version.

The solution is simple:

  1. Go to ~ / Music / iTunes or wherever you have your iTunes library located.
  2. Rename the file "iTunes Library.itl" to "iTunes Library.itl.old".
  3. Go to the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and grab the most recent file.
  4. Rename this file to "iTunes Library.itl" and put it in your iTunes folder
  5. Launch iTunes normally.

As you can see, the solution is not complicated at all, and in a minute it should be fixed without major problems.

excellent information I had been trying to open iTunes for more than a week, and before that I did not get that error, it just did not open, I even thought it was because I had installed windows 10. Thank you very much.

It served as a basis for solving the problem, but in my case it was simpler, I have window 7 and the iTunes menu only came out "I Tunes library", with the right button I gave it to "rename the file" and I put the one that you said “I Tunes Library.itl.old and the solution was immediate. For what I consider your collaboration very successful, thank you.

It works but it has a problem: it erases the most recent settings of your tracklists. You will have to locate song by song and re-add them. For this I give you 3 out of 5 stars.
