Is there a better way to start the year than with a new lawsuit against Apple? The Cupertino company is seen again in court and this time it is due to the reduction of the free space available to the user after installing iOS 8. According to the plaintiff, and the judge has seen enough indications that he may have some reason Because the process continues, the space of some Apple devices can be reduced up to 23,1% in the worst case after having installed iOS 8. The problem is that Apple (like the rest of the manufacturers) advertises its models with capacities of 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128GB when in reality that capacity is less, since what the operating system occupies is not discounted. We analyze the data below.
Device | Free space (iOS 7.1.2) | Free space (iOS 8 GM) |
---|---|---|
iPhone 4S 32GB | 27.4GB | 26.6GB |
iPhone 5 32GB | 27.3GB | 26.7GB |
iPhone 5C 32GB | 27.2GB | 26.5GB |
iphone 5s 64gb | 56.0GB | 55.1GB |
iPod Touch 5G 32GB | 27.3GB | 26.6GB |
iPad Mini 16GB | 13.0GB | 12.1GB |
iPad Mini Retina 16GB | 12.3GB | 11.0GB |
This table can serve as an example to show how the available free space has been reduced with the new update from Apple. The most affected devices are those that already saw their capacity greatly diminished with iOS 7, and that have seen it even more reduced with iOS 8, with the 16GB iPad Mini Retina as the hardest hit of devices, with just 11GB free for the user, 1,3GB less than with the previous version, something not inconsiderable.
That each operating system requires more space is almost obvious, something that is compounded by the fact that applications increasingly occupy more space due to new devices. An application optimized for the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and universal, valid for iPhone and iPad, it contains all the images, icons and files necessary for it to work on each and every Apple device, even if you really only use it to be used in one. The solution has already been implemented by Apple, but only in part. Instead of dispensing with 16GB devices and starting at 32GB of capacity, what it has done is starting from 16GB and jumping to 64GB dispensing with 32GB. Now there is only € 100 (more or less) difference between 16 and 64GBMuch less than before, but the more affordable devices only include 16GB so the problem persists for them. Taking into account that Apple devices cannot be expanded in capacity, we must assess very well before buying one if it is not worth spending a little more and having 64GB even though we think we are not going to complete them.
