Offline playback of videos hosted on YouTube will come to iOS in November

YouTube-1

Youtube spoke on its blog a few weeks ago about the new functionality that it would release in the coming months. It was a feature that would allow all Android and iOS users to view YouTube content (videos) without an Internet connection for two days. That is, I am going on a trip and I want to listen to a playlist that I have created on YouTube, we will simply have to press a couple of buttons and immediately the YouTube application will host the video in the terminal's cache to be able to view it later.

Youtube partners have already received an explanatory email of this new function that will be released in November of this year for all devices compatible with the Google service application. After the jump I leave you the long letter and a brief summary of how the function works:

Dear partner:

We are writing to inform you about a new feature scheduled for release in November that affects your content. This functionality is part of ongoing changes to give users more opportunities to enjoy videos and channels on YouTube mobile. The functionality is rolling out with all partners enabled but you can disable it now if you wish. Below is more information about the functionality and instructions on how to disable it.

What's happening

In the YouTube application, users will be able, through "add to device" functionality available in videos and playlists, to designate certain content that can be viewed for a short period of time when an Internet connection does not available. With this, if a user experiences a loss of connectivity, they will still be able to watch the videos they have added to their devices for a limited period of up to 48 hours. If the device is offline for more than 48 hours, the content will not be viewable offline until the device is reconnected. Once connected, the offline window refreshes and the viewer is able to see the content again.

How does it work for viewers?

From the viewing page through the "add to device" functionality, viewers will be able to designate certain content that can be viewed for a short period of time when they do not have connectivity. The moment the user no longer has connectivity, they will be able to view the videos and playlists that they have added to their device by accessing the videos through an "on device" section.

How does it work for partners: tips and statistics?

Google ads will run relative to the content, and the views will be added to the total count. Please note that other ad formats that will not be supported, and rental or purchase videos will not be included in this functionality.
All content is activated. But you can disable it now.

Operation of offline videos in our iDevices

As you have been able to read in the letter that the YouTube partners have received, you can see some interesting characteristics about the operation of this function:

  • All the content of any user will be capable of being "downloaded" on any device to be able to view it offline. except if it is changed in the video settings.
  • The payment channels (available for a couple of months) will not have this functionality, therefore, they will have to be viewed on the computer.
  • There will still be ads in each video even if we do not have an active Internet connection.
  • All the statistics they will continue to count, that is, offline playback data will be counted once the device connects to the Internet.

We are waiting for November to be able to test this new YouTube function.
