Modemgate? The Qualcomm LTE modem of the iPhone 7 Plus is faster than the one of Intel

Qualcom LTE Modem vs. Intel

Last year, the iPhone 6s came with the Chipgate, the annual scandal that came in 2015 because Apple had assembled chips from two different companies in its smartphone that showed disparate performance results. It seems that those of Cupertino did not learn the lesson and this year they have stumbled upon a similar stone, this year being the component that is better in one of its versions the LTE modem.

What we can already begin to label as Modemgate is that Apple has used two different LTE modems, one only compatible with GMS Intel XMM7360 networks and the other compatible with GSM and CDMA Qualcomm MDM9645 networks. Like last year, users who have gotten an iPhone 7 with the Intel modem are disappointed, first because the Intel's LTE modem does not support as many networks operator such as Qualcomm and second because the modem Qualcomm is much faster than Intel's.

Chipgate reissue with iPhone 7 Plus LTE modems

Cellunar Insights did a performance simulation where they wanted to test performance at different distances from the cell tower using two iPhone 7s, one with the Intel modem and one with the Qualcomm modem. In the three tests they did, both iPhone 7s offered similar performance, as long as the signal was good. When the signal went down, the Intel LTE modem inexplicably lost performance, offering the modem Qualcomm 30% better performance than the Intel modem.

Which iPhone carries each of these modems? Cellular Insights does not give global data on which one uses what, but it does say that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus of Verizon, Sprint and free carry the Qualcomm modem. On the other hand, iPhone 7 from T-Mobile USA and Telstra use Intel's modem. Based on this information, and if I'm not mistaken, the devices sold outside the United States would all use the Qualcomm modem, someone correct me if I'm wrong. In the official website, we can see which iPhone carries which modem in theory. Personally I am not clear if the ones that appear on the web are those offered by the operators or are all compatible with their networks. To be safe and in my opinion, we will have to wait to check the LTE modem model that we have with some application.

So we have modemgate? This year, Apple has placed all orders for A10 Fusion from TSMC. Will they do the same with LTE modems in 2017 to avoid any chance of -gate on the XNUMXth anniversary iPhone?

HELLO PABLO, WILL THERE BE A DIFFERENCE WITH THE FREE FABRIICA AND THE COMORATES IN SOME LIKE AÑIA TELEFÓNICA DE USA?
I always buy in the USA but the Liberado de factory since I am from Argentina and it would always seem to have a better performance in terms of signal, even in the USA. Greetings

Pablo according to the apple page and looking at the models, in the rest of Spain we all carry the Intel one

Hello, selui. Thanks for the note. I have edited the post, but I cannot give 100% sure information either because today I am not having much time to investigate. According to what Cellular Insights says, what we see on the official page that you have provided us are the models offered by the operators. What I have in mind is that those from Qualcomm can touch anyone who buys a free one, since they are compatible with all networks. On the other hand, those of Intel are requested as in packages and these packages are requested by the operators.

As I mentioned in the correction of the post, it is best to try an application. When I do something that I have to do, I will find a way to make sure (see if I can find it).

      A greeting.

I bought the 7 plus in the US Apple Store for free, as I read in the post, this would come with Qualcomm, will you correct me if I'm wrong?

The A1660 and A1661 models mount Qualcomm while the A1778 and A1784 integrate Intel modem.

Sorry, I have iphone 7 to 1660. Restore factory operating system, restore network settings; change Nano Sim company. The LTE signal is excellent. I have two lines with the same company: It happens that in the 6S the navigation is optimal and in the 7 with the same signal level it works well, but I have micro cuts that is, sometimes I enter and it is looking for data until it reconnects, I don't know to do now. Team? Return? A thousand grace if someone can provide me with data.
