Seagate Wireless Plus 1TB WiFi Drive Review (I): Hardware

Seagate

A few days ago I told you about this fabulous hard drive. I've been looking for one of these WiFi drives for a long time to expand the capacity of my iPad 3 to only 16GB (what a serious mistake). When I discovered the Seagate Wireless Plus I jumped in without thinking, because if it delivered everything it promised, it was perfect for what I was looking for. And I have to say, that after trying it, it is almost perfect and highly recommended. if you are looking to expand the storage capacity of your device. I want to do a review as detailed as possible, because the device deserves it, and that is why I am going to divide it into two parts: hardware (the device itself) and software (the application to use it).

First impressions

The first thing that surprises when you see the disc and hold it in your hands is its size and weight.. It's barely bigger than my 1TB LaCie Rikiki, one of the smaller 1TB external drives (left in the picture). It is well built, although completely made of plastic. The top cover is in a gray that simulates metal, and the sides and bottom are soft-touch plastic, with four small rubber bands to support it on the table.

You can barely see two small LEDs that indicate the operation (green) and the active WiFi network (blue). On the side we find the power button, very discreet. You will not see any other connection Except for the small entry for the charger cable, it is hardly distinguishable.

Because the USB connection is hidden by a cover. In order to connect the USB 3.0 cable, you have to remove that cover and place an adapter to which the cable can be connected.

Seagate-Wireless-Plus-07

It is the only negative point that I find with the device. I would have preferred a simple microUSB connection to charge and connect USB cable, although I would have had to sacrifice USB 3.0. But this system is very common in Seagate drives.

Seagate-Wireless-Plus-09

The connection to the WiFi network generated by the disk is very simple, like any other WiFi. By default it is unprotected, but you can put a password on it, even change the name of the network.

The device allows connect up to 8 different devices simultaneouslyAlthough only 3 can play different HD content simultaneously, which is more than enough for most circumstances.

In the next part of the review I will explain the process of synchronization with the computer and the use of the application for iOS to be able to reproduce the content.

    How much is it??

Well it depends on the site and the day. In amazon I have seen the same at more than € 250 than at € 180 (the price for which I bought it)

I read on gizmodo that you constantly disconnect, right?

It is indeed exasperating that you are passing all your information through USB and disconnect all the time

I have already spent more than 200GB of videos and did not disconnect on any occasion. And I have already seen several episodes of series on my iPad Mini and everything is perfect, subtitles included.

It is true that on some occasion, after a long time connected but without using it, I have had to turn off and turn on the hard disk to be able to connect again, but it has only happened a couple of times, and always after more than an hour without have used it.

I have the previous GoFlex Satellite model and it is spectacular ... combined with xbmc you will not need the application ... and you will see the Mkv smooth and without jerks

A DOUBT PLEASE, BECAUSE I HAVE DIFFERENT INFORMATION, IS IT NECESSARY TO CONNECT THE IPAD TO THE SEAGATE TO HAVE WIFI WHERE YOU ARE? OR IS IT CREATE AN IPAD AND SEAGATE CONNECTION AND IT IS NOT NECESSARY AND CAN BE USED ANYWHERE? THANK YOU

You can create your own network

Unfortunately your analysis is very poor and very in favor of the manufacturer, I am almost sure that at this point (7 months or more from your last post) your external disk has already suffered a serious problem, well mine no longer works and you can not access in any way, possibly it has a factory defect and if you have an article that supports my theory or some knowledge about it, I would like you to let me know.

If you have had a bad experience with it, I am very sorry, but my analysis is as I tested the article. At present it is not in my hands so I cannot tell you how it works. If it fails, what you should do is call the technical service because it is still under warranty.
