Sphero stops manufacturing the BB-8 and R2-D2 at the end of the contract with Disney

A few years ago, the manufacturer Sphero became known around the world after launching a series of small robots controlled with the iPhone based on some of the most striking characters from Star Wars, thanks to the agreement reached with the giant Disney.

But as we can read in The Verge, Sphero CEO Paul Berberian has confirmed that they are getting rid of all available inventory of the different models that were launched on the market and that do not plan to produce more units, so if you have one of these products, you must save it as gold on cloth.

In this way, Sphero will stop offering the BB-8, BB-9E, R2-D2, lightning mcqueen car y Spider-Man. None of these products are currently available through the Sphero website. Instead, we find other products of similar operation such as the Bolt, Mini and SPRK +. Support for the application that controls these devices will continue to receive updates for at least two years.

According to the CEO of Sphero, they have been forced to stop manufacturing because the licensed toy business required more resources than it was worth. In addition, sales are only good when the premiere of a new film in this saga approaches. The rest of the time, they are hardly in demand in the market.

Once the commercial agreement with Disney was finalized, which allowed it to gain a foothold in the market, the company became will focus on expanding its ecosystem in educational settings, to bring their products to schools.

If you've always wanted to get one of the little robots controlled by the iPhone, now may be the time, since if the company is getting rid of available stock, you can probably find it at a lower price than usual. Although the opposite is also likely to happen and its price will rise considerably among Star Wars fans.
