In the App Store there are many options to stream video with the iPhone or iPod touch, but most of them are usually paid and we can really avoid making an unnecessary expense if we are moderately intelligent.
From my point of view, the most sensible thing is to set up a tiny web server on the multimedia computer at home and then access said server with MobileSafari with the iPhone, look for the video that we want to play in the folder structure and QuickTime will simply take care of the playback, but obviously the video has to be encoded.
As for the web server to use, my recommendation is that if you do not want to complicate and you are on Mac OS X use the integrated system, although if you are going to use it more or want something more complete you can do like me and have MAMP installed , which works like a charm and is free. If you choose to use Linux the option Apache bareback is quite obvious, it works luxuriously and without problems, while if Windows is your option you can opt for a lightweight server (and even portable) or WAMP.
- Advantages: Much more free space on the iPhone, not depending on connecting it to the computer and the speed of downloading.
- Disadvantages: Much higher battery consumption (due to WiFi), need to have the computer on during the entire playback.
In the end it is as simple as putting (for example) 192.168.1.2 on the iPhone, looking for the video we want and playing it. Easy, simple, cheap and useful. And thanks to Jose Luis for reminding me of this practice that I had already abandoned.
Hi Joan.
The issue is that the videos have to be seen natively on the iPhone, if not you're wrong ... You can convert them with one of the many programs out there, such as Videora on Windows or RoadMovie on Mac.
Hello,
I have done what this article explains and I have had no problems setting up the web server ... however, my iPhone 3G S cannot open any of the movies that I have put ...
Do I need quicktime codecs to open movies with an .avi extension?
I hope some advice and thank you very much for the article!
ok Carlihnhos ... now I'll look 🙂
Thank you very much for the clarification.
a big hug!
But do you download this "MAMP" program from the apple store?
Hello Litos130,
mmmm… I don't think you understood the article.
The web server is not your phone ... but your computer. MAMP must be installed on your Mac, Windows or GNU / Linux computer.
And then, you open the safari from your iPhone pointing at your computer (for example: http://192.168.1.5) and you will see the pages or files that you have posted in the / htdocs folder on your computer.
Do you understand
Regards,
joan
I have Mac and iPhone 3Gs but excuse my question since I accept half ass. I want to be able to see from my iPhone what the webcam of my macbook takes, obviously live. Is that possible? Some of yours. Thank you very much and have the best day.
Leandro, you can do that with Orb. You have to install it on your iphone and on your mac and you can see the iSight live, as well as view files and more ...
I have a problem with my iPhone, what happens is that I can only listen to music x the headphones and not x your mobile speaker .. how do I do it… ??
