Tethering and Movistar's 20 GB limitation

Now that we are talking so much about Tethering (using the iPhone 3G connection on another device such as a laptop) we have the doubt of What will happen with the 20 GB limitation imposed by Movistar as a monthly download limit with the iPhone 3G.

Although 20 GB seems to us a very difficult amount to overcome, the truth is that if the 3G connection of the iPhone is allowed from a laptop, I am sure that more than one will exceed that limit without problem.

Will they remove it? Won't they allow tethering? Will they charge us a bonus for each extra GB? Many unresolved questions and no official response at the moment.

Well, very easy: 3G connection you have either 200 MBs or 1 GB.
Then it's all gprs. It's going to be difficult to get to 20GB like this ...

The only thing would be to have the iPhone connected all day long, and the phone would last you two days.

  2.   Actualidad iPhone said

@Jordi: Yeah, that's exactly why. If Movistar is going to allow Tethering, the logical thing is that the limit of 200 MB or 1 GB is extended a little, since 200 MB if you use it with a laptop it will last two days.

Of course, with Movistar you never know.

    Best regards,

Nobody in their right mind will use the iphone tethering to download things from the emule or the like. It will be to surf the internet or consult something in particular but not to use it as a modem as a replacement for a broadband connection. If what you need is a portable broadband connection, it will be much better to hire one of the many offers available today.

  4.   jordi said

Currently, I have no doubt that the contract remains as it is. No extensions, no concessions, or anything ...

We are talking about movistar, remember that.

They would sell their mother for 1 mega.

  5.   X's said

Elin is right, it will be used in extreme cases, using it as a regular modem is a mistake. Although we depend on movistar.

  6.   daniuber said

You are absolutely right, using it as a regular modem is a mistake that will cost us dearly over time. The most logical thing, we would use tethering when we go on vacation and want to watch anything.

But come on ... I don't know what to expect, we are living the same situation as last year ...

    Greetings.

I have the iPhone with 3.0 and yesterday when I connected it to iTunes I skipped an update of the Movistar operator and now I have activated the option to use it as a modem, it is seen that Movistar is going to allow it

  8.   kuassar said

And I say, if I go on vacation, can I use it without problems for Messenger, see a website like Marca and Sport? Or will I reach the limit too fast?

  9.   JCD said

@Kuassar: it will get to you, I use it from time to time with the PDAnet and everything is fine

  10.   loponline said

Well, the update ami does not skip me and I have os 3.0 ... I don't know what to do since I happened to update the operator's file by hand.

I've hit iTunes 10 times and it can't find the carrier update. Any more ideas?

  11.   adrian said

Neither ami, nothing that jumps automatically.
It is also impossible, until the 17th I would not have to skip anything ..

To look at the online newspapers I do not use the pc. Moreover, I only use it for some online game or to see electronic calico since I have an iPhone. Although I see great that it can be used as a modem, I still do not see too much output until the gb of movistar goes up. It's my opinion, let's go

  13.   Raul said

Hello everyone. It has also updated my operator settings and now I have tethering activated with Movistar. When activating it, they showed me a message telling me to contact them to receive information about the service in question. It sounds like I will leave you but I will charge you ;-P

I have been using tethering with PdaNet for some months now and it is impossible to download 20gb in a month given the speed of gprs which is limited to 128k / s. The most I have downloaded in a month has been 5GB and I use it very intensively. Using p2p programs is impossible and the videos have to wait a long time so I see this limitation a bit absurd

  15.   loponline said

I give up. I hope the others are lucky. I have not resisted and I have followed the tutorial to put this file from iTunes. Everything fine, I rebooted and nothing, I can't find the option to share the Internet anywhere …… ..

  16.   mihi said

It is absurd that they have sold us all a flat rate that does not really exist ... it has a limit and it is 20 gigabytes ... they can not be covered with misleading advertising? And those who decide to use the tethering mode only in extreme cases ... what You are lucky to be able to pay for a normal connection, now with the crises there are people who cannot afford it, I will move soon and my withdrawal with telephone is in progress, soon I will only be able to use the internet from the iphone and of course I will I plan to use it for everything I can ... and I assure you that even with only 1 mega of connection those 20 gigabytes are tripled in a month 1 greeting!

  17.   Miguel said

Damn you buy an iphone and you can not afford a normal internet connection? I that you reviewed my priorities ...

  18.   rodolfo said

Well, in Mexico we are worse, the company that is in charge is telcel and the limit is 3 gb

  19.   Elin said

According to Miguel… you have an iPhone, you pay a fixed monthly fee for data and voice and you can't afford a broadband internet connection? IF you have to listen to everything ...

  20.   Acme said

A question, and if instead of using the native tethering option of the iphone we use PdaNet or a similar one, would we skip the control of movistar?

  21.   adrian said

Aver ... since when is the limitation of movistar 20 GB ???

As far as I know, paying 15 euros for the internet I have 200 megabytes….

I have just been confirmed by phone via MOVISTAR that "using the iphone 3g as a MODEM on PC is part of the FLAT rate".

Although this information is from Movistar, and is recorded on their part, theirs would be that they make an official statement or something.

Anyway, the issue is clear Telefónica ALLOWS to use the iphone as a 3g modem within the flat rate without additional cost.

I hope this solves the doubt of many, mine has solved it. 🙂

  24.   adrian said

Loponline could you explain to me what is that of 20 GB? Movistar gives you 200 megabytes paying 15 euros, right?

  25.   Elin said

No. It gives you 200 MB at a speed and from there the speed is low but you still have a connection ..

Elin and Miguel,… let's see, it must be entertaining to criticize the economic situation of the rock from the comfort of your sad screens, how will you understand smart people, the telephone contract can be broken… but how does the one to break the penalty for non-compliance Would you pay me !!? with 1 year remaining on the contract ... I don't even know why I explain na ... that you pass from my gang of digitized ewoks!

For those who do not "catch" iTunes the famous update of the operator of Telefonica_acc.ipp or something similar, the steps that I followed were the following:

1.Download the iPhone OSX 3.0 Golden Master Version (the same one that will be available next Wednesday, June 17)
    URL: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=30D7BWES

2.Download the operator update from Telefonica
    URL: http://the.firehou.se/data/Telefonica_es.ipcc

    3.Download version 8.2beta (Mac / Windows)
    URL: -

    4. Change the current date to the computer for the day 17-18 June

    5. Make "Synchronization" of the iPhone and then restore it, since with the "update" of the iPhone data is lost!

Well, once everything is ready we go to the screen of our iPhone in iTunes and with ALT (Mac) or Shift (Windows) pressed we select Restore and the explorer will open where it will allow us to select the iPhone OSX 3.0 previously downloaded. okay

After about 15 minutes of firmware change on our iPhone it will ask us for the PIN.

Once we have our iPhone connected and recognized by the computer, we repeat ALT (Mac) or Shift (Windows) pressed, select Update and look for the update of the downloaded operator (BASICALLY IT IS TO HAVE ACTIVE THE TETHERING (Share Internet connection).

I imagine that like me, it will not open music or contacts or anything ... except multimedia (Audio and Video) you will recover it by restoring from the copy you have made before!

    * In the event that the iPhone is not "activated" once 3.0 is installed, you disconnect it, change the date to today and reconnect it

    ALREADY VOLAAAAAAAR !!

    greetings from BCN!

I do not usually criticize more than the idiocies of some users and in this case you put a VERY big one. Say something like «how lucky you are to be able to pay for a normal connection, now with crises there are people who cannot afford it» when we are talking about the iPhone that is a LUXURY object (it is still a very expensive whim, not the reach of all and that requires a certain economic level) is stupid. One gets tired of seeing criticism for criticizing, drawing reasons from where there are none. I wish the world was perfect, everyone had access to an iPhone, internet connection and calls were free etc but unfortunately we live in a world that is based on making profits.

I'm sorry but I still think that Movistar will not lose the opportunity to take a few euros for this matter, that of course.

I still don't understand where these precious 20Gb come from. I have 200Mb per month, if I do tethering do I have 20Gb? Ridiculous, right?

  33.   mihi said

See according to the rate you have contracted, you have 200 mgas or 1 giga to 3 mb of connection speed, from there the speed is limited to 1 mb and you can still download! q less! it is a flat rate ...

I see a couple of bream dialogues.

    1. If we are going to talk about what money is spent on, let's talk about all the kids with truñings, with a BMW of 30 thousand euros, of all the people who spend 60 euros a week on farlopa, or on drinks, or those who , charging a thousand euros, they go every day to eat from a menu of 10 euros ... Let's talk about those who spend 40 million in a 2-bedroom apartment, mortgaged for 1400 euros, charging 2000 between the two ... Each one spends the money on what he feels like it. Some prefer to have an iPhone and access to the 3G network 24 hours a day than to pay 70 euros for a flat rate and a landline at home when you do not spend even 4 hours awake a day on it. Yo, I hack what I can.

    2. 200 MEGAS AT NORMAL SPEED !!!!! THEN IT IS FLAT RATE WITH LIMITED SPEEDAAA !!!! How many times do you have to put it?

  35.   Alec said

It seems to me that hardly anyone reads the fine print of contracts. Since I have contracted the Movistar flat rate, both the 10 and the 15 and the iphone, I know that using it as a modem is allowed for the simple reason that it is not prohibited. The voip itself is expressly prohibited in the conditions of use. I have used a PDA as a modem several times with Movistar's flat rates. It is something that comes standard for years in windows mobile. The novelty is that now it also comes on the iphone. The 20 Gb limit is the generic limit of what Movistar calls "responsible use" of the data rate and it seems most logical to me, I have a 6Mb adsl and I don't think I've even reached those 20 GB in any month using emule.
By the way, when it reaches 200 Mb the speed is reduced to 128 Kb in the iphone rate. IT IS NOT REDUCED TO GPRS. The GPRS speed is barely 20 Kb in the best conditions.

  36.   Daniel said

Aleko forgive me for correcting you, but with a 6 MB adsl I am going down around 1.000GB a month and it could go down a lot more, because the technical limit would be 1.999GB / month, since with every 1Mb of download you can download using it 24 hours a day at 100%, 333,33GB a month.

    Best regards,

    Question:

Could you then use Skype on your computer using the iPhone in Tethering?

    Alex

  38.   Ester said

    Confirmed:
Movistar will not charge for using the modem iphone. I just called 609 and after having spoken with two ladies from different departments who contradicted each other, they finally passed me on to the right girl, who was aware of all the updates (firmware 3.0 and the one they would do) and I It has been said that with total security and as with the rest of the mobiles that allow this function, Movistar will not charge more than the rate already contracted, therefore, our connection is limited to what we have with the iphone. I have asked him if Movistar will get new rates thinking about tethering and he has told me that they have no evidence that it will expand it, but that in any case, on Wednesday when 3.0 officially comes out and we connect, we will do so under the contract that we have on the iphone. There is no more, so great.
I understand that we are distrustful, but it is true that the iPhone is not the first mobile that allows this function, and if it is not charged with the rest of the mobiles, it is absurd that they do it with the iPhone

Well, and those of us who have a free iPhone, with for example, Orange, with a flat data rate, what happens? yes, we are going to be more lost than the rice boat!

  40.   Marc said

I just called MOVISTAR and all of us who have 3G iPhones with the contracted flat rate will be able to enjoy the Tethering service with version 3.0 ... WITHOUT ANY ADDITIONAL COST !!!! goodness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41.   James said

Hi, for those of you who have used tethering in the last month, is it confirmed that Movistar does not charge for using tethering?

In the next week I'm going for a 3gs and I would like to be clear about what I can use. One thing is what they say on the phone, another is what comes on the bills, right?

And the use of voip is prohibited but is that type of traffic cut? And the question of using skype on a computer connected to the internet through the iphone?

    Thank you

  42.   benjamin said

Hello, do you know if with the iphone 3g plus 3g rate when you put the sim in a movistar usb modem they charge you more or is it within the rate?

    greetings and thanks

  43.   Guille said

Also confirmed by me now. Tethering with Movistar works.
Those of Orange, the same with the program that comes in the Cydia package you can also use it as a modem.
There is a video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnmXyK4Qia8
With this tutorial I have activated the tethering of Movistar after eating my head. It is easy and simple.

As for the limit, they are 200Mb per month, and then they slow you down, but you still have internet (at snail speed ...), and when your billing cycle starts again they raise your speed again.

As for Skype and VoiP, I use Skype on the iphone with the application that comes free in APPLE STORE, but I do not use it yet on the VoiP phone. Of course, SMS sending programs through the internet do work and do not charge you anything extra for movistar.
I use the SkySms and it works great.

If anyone knows of any program to make Voip calls and that they are cheap, send me an email, because it would be great for me since I'm outside of Spain and I don't want to miss out on calling with Roaming. trumpet_avila@yahoo.es

    Thank you!

  44.   Some kind said

Man, reaching 20GB is nonsense, because from the 200mb, 1gb or 3gb that you have contracted, lower the speed to 128kbps, a miserable thing with which nobody would have eggs to download 20Gb in this way.

  45.   is the unknown said

Getting there you can reach 20GB in a day, at the moment I do not have an iPhone but I have used the data mode offered by telephone, and in one day I have reached 30GB of download (I use fake emules, and azureus in addition to managers of direct download all at the same time, mixed with a good team) at no time under the limitation of the line, I know that it is not the same but it is a card with a data contract just like the iphone, telefonica has not told me anything .
It is a very good option to have the iPhone connected all day and also download the normal line with the iPhone and thus do a load balance, I hope to acquire this terminal soon and thus be able to enjoy the internet at full speed.

You are safe because I am a mess. And I called Movistar 5 times and of the 5, 3 they tell me that it can, the other two that it is billed separately since the iPhone what it makes is a gprs call in a distributor tells me that it can and that it does not have separate billing. And I downloaded the details of the bill and Internet gprs and billings and another that puts iPhone plus and Kb downloaded. I don't know what to believe anymore. I await your reply
