The amazing odyssey of downloading updates on the Apple Watch Series 3

Apple Watch Series 3

El Apple Watch It is one of the most advanced smart watches on the market. The next generation, the Series 7, is expected to include new medical sensors that can inform us about blood glucose, an important technological advance for the device. Apple currently sells the Apple Watch Series 6, SE, and Series 3. The latter was presented in 2017 so it is a product that is already 4 years old and is still on sale officially. However, updating to the latest versions of watchOS 7 is a real odyssey mainly due to its lack of storage space that is required to proceed with the update.

Apple Watch Series 3 makes watchOS updates difficult

The arrival of iOS and iPadOS 14.5 has meant a full stop in the history of this fourteenth great version of Apple's mobile operating system. The possibility of unlocking the iPhone through the Apple Watch when we have a mask on and we cannot do it with Face ID has been one of the big claims of the update. However, many users with an Apple Watch Series 3 have had serious problems updating their watch and to be able to have this function available.

This will be the next Apple Watch Series 7

This is because although the functionality is included in iOS 14.5 it is also necessary to update the Apple Watch to watchOS 7.4. The problem for these users is the low storage capacity of the Watch Series 3 and the exorbitant capacity that watchOS requires to be updated. In fact, there are two messages that have been torture for these users. One of them is the following:

To install the watchOS update, your Apple Watch needs at least 3,0 GB of available storage. You can free up storage space by deleting apps using the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

Apple Watch

At that time, the user try to remove as much content as you can from your Apple Watch: apps, downloaded songs, etc. However, the low storage of the device means that not only do you not have many applications, but the content that you have is hardly zero. The next step, after deleting everything possible, is the following message from watchOS:

To install the watchOS update, unlink your Apple Watch and pair it again in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.

And finally ... the machine is always right

And there is no other option than to pay attention to the device. In order to upgrade to watchOS 7.4 we must proceed to the unpairing of the Apple Watch Series 3 from our iPhone to later link it again. And finally, after a long and tedious odyssey, we managed to update our smartwatch.

This process occurs in large part of the watchOS updates on the Apple Watch Series 3 due, as we have said, to its zero storage capacity. Now the question arises as to whether watchOS 8 will be compatible with this watch since Apple currently sells it in its store officially, and discontinuing the update of a device that until now is being marketed is something difficult to understand.

How strange, I have an Apple Watch series 3 (stainless steel version) with 10gb of storage and it has never given me problems. In fact I have it updated to the latest version and it works super well.

Strongly agree on all of the above. It's a pain, on many occasions I have to reset the clock to zero. I have everything removed and it tells me it needs more space. It is a real odyssey. They would have to make a system that takes up less space, since nothing fits.
